What Does $54 Million Buy You?
The Short Answer: A very large automatic molding line. The Long Answer:
• Kunkel Wagner automatic molding machine. • 56 x 84 x 30-in. flask size. • 40 molds per hour. • Automatic pouring system. • More than double the mold production rate of the previous line. • Ability to produce commercial castings in addition to municipal work. • Ability to produce castings with increased sand to metal ratios. • 70 tons of iron per shift. • Mold weights up to approximately 2,000 lbs. • Pattern changes within the cycle time (40 mph on average). • New sand system with improved compaction performance via a multi-piston hydraulic squeeze head, twinpress or airpress.
• 75,000 sq. ft. of additional space. • Double decker molding line for mold cooling (120-minute standard). • Additional room for future flask-capacity increases.

“We had to replace our hydroslinger
lines because of quality, flexibility, working conditions and lead times,” said Bill Martin, vice president of indus- trial sales and operations. “Scheduling [those lines] was a nightmare, and it made us less competitive.” At the time of the decision to pur-
chase the new line, the municipal mar- ket was strong and growing stronger, with housing starts and infrastructure spending on the climb. The new au- tomatic molder was meant to add the capacity necessary to keep pace with the growth. To protect against market volatility, though, the line also would give Neenah the flexibility to shift between production runs and open up supplemental industrial casting capabilities and capacity.
