UWM Professor Rohatgi: Existing Equipment Soon Will Make Nano-Castings Professor Pradeep Rohatgi is optimis-

tic about the prospects of nanostruc- tured materials in metalcasting. And he should know—he was recently made the head of a University of Wisconsin– Milwaukee (UWM) research center that is working on developing the materials. “Foundries could start making these

modern products without having to update their equipment,” Rohatgi said. The Center for Advanced Materi-

als Manufacturing (CAMM) at UWM is working with several companies to de- velop an infrastructure for scaling up the production of nano-materials, which are embedded with atomic-scale particles to make them cheaper, lighter and stronger. In addition to being named head of

CAMM, Rohatgi recently received the 2010 Innovative Research Award in Tribology from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a Wiscon- sin and UWM distinguished professor of engineering. He received a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Banaras Univ., Varanasi, India, in 1961, a master’s in materials science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963 and a doctorate in materials science from the school in 1964.
