INDIE PROFILE
Crazy Train Music’s Chris Huskinson explains the importance of online marketing and speedy service and reveals plans for a shop re-vamp…
Who is the present owner? My dad John is, although I've been running the business for the last few months and I'm taking over in April.
When was the store established? January 2003.
How many employees do you have? Just me and my brother Rob.
What are your best selling lines? We sell quite a bit of EMG and other guitar brands, but Seymour Duncan has been our bread and butter for a long time.
How is business compared to last year? I would say around the same. It’s not a patch on three or four years ago, but we haven't been pushing the shop for the last few years. With different things happening in our personal lives, the shop has had to take a back seat. This is going to change with a shop re-fit planned for August. I'm putting us back on the map very soon.
How do you market the shop? As a Seymour Duncan specialist, we hold a large amount of product aimed mainly at the online buyers. Our shop is in a tiny village with not a great deal of passing trade, so we rely heavily on the internet.
How do you compete with online competition?
The internet is the future of our retailing. I'm putting a lot of time and effort into our online presence with Facebook, Twitter and Youtube pages as well as our own website. We advertise with Google and we are hoping to advertise with the national guitar magazines.
What are your biggest strengths? Customer service is paramount. We have good stock levels and aim to expand our repertoire over the next year. We know there are customers out there that want a branded product and want it delivered fast, but also want a person on the end of a phone that understands the product.
How do you ensure good service? We aim to get any online order in the post on the same day and with our stock levels quite high, we achieve this on most occasions. No order or transaction is ever too small. I also try and keep my knowledge of products up-to-date.
What product can’t you live without? From a sales point of view, anything with Seymour Duncan written on it. From a personal point of view, the new chocolate Weetabix are quite nice!
How can the industry do more to support retail? Find a way to stop US shops selling into the UK via eBay. We were in talks earlier this year with
an American amp company to become an exclusive distributor for their products. After they sent us the prices, however, we saw shops in the States selling into the UK via eBay at a massively reduced price from that, which would have been a UK retail price, forcing us to let that massive opportunity pass.

“We have big ambitions for Bösendorfer and have appointed dealers that aim to make Bösendorfer a much more significant segment of the UK piano market,” commented Charles Bozon, Yamaha Music UK’s product manager for pianos and the Bösendorfer sales manager for the UK. “We will be working closely with our dealers to ensure these wonderful pianos are marketed with style and flair – we’ll also be focusing on more artist activities to bring the brand to life through a range live music events and promotions.” YAMAHA: 01908 366700
JHS & CO HAS announced that its traditional night shift is swinging into operation to keep up with the seasonal rush as retail gears up for Christmas. The JHS night shift will continue right
up to Christmas Eve, meaning JHS will be working around the clock to ensure that orders reach dealers as soon as possible. To support the sales office and
warehouse resources, the company is carrying its highest ever stock levels to see that every possible order is satisfied. “Who knows what’s going to happen
this year,” commented MD Dennis Drumm (pictured with the JHS sales warehouse teams). “What is certain though is that there will be demand and JHS is determined to ensure that all the
key, high-margin seasonal lines our dealers depend upon us to supply will be with them. “Working around the clock and shipping right up until the very last minute on December 23rd shows the high level of commitment JHS has to hard pressed dealers. We will be delivering from record levels of stock to our customers, who’ll possibly need more support than ever this year to capture every last sale. “We’ll also be offering a super fast service between Christmas and New Year, to help dealers pick up those impulse purchases and then looking forward to a brand new year on January 1st 2011.” JHS: 0113 286 5381
