distributor, Hal Leonard. This year, however, things will be a little different, as Ian Morgan explained. “NAMM is vital for me to meet with
my international clients,” he said. “But for me to have the products I want to sell through on the Music Sales America/Hal Leonard stand, which might not be selling those same titles, is problematic.
“So this year we will have our own international sales presence there where we can service everyone other than the US market. “For us, NAMM is an international event and customers turn up from all around the world – along with the Frankfurt and China shows, it is important for us to be there. “I know it’s a cliché to say that the weather is nice in Anaheim, but this is important. People are in a better mood, they sometimes come with their families, they are mixing business with pleasure and it makes a great business atmosphere.” On the buying side, I spoke to
Dolphin’s Jason Tavaria – one of many retailers that makes NAMM the first of the red ink days in his new diary. “I go to NAMM for three main
reasons,” he explained. “To see the latest products, to build both new and
established relationships and to make some deals – it is an important trade show for us. “NAMM also gives me the chance to meet with US company bosses and other business leaders. It’s not often you get to do this, so coming to Anaheim is a great place to catch up on the American trade. “I always go with some sort of shopping list, but with a show this size, you never know what is going to be around the corner, so I am always ready to be surprised and pick up something I wasn’t expecting.” Summing this up, then, is NAMM’s
president and CEO, Joe Lamond. You would expect him to praise his own show, of course, but when he spoke to MI Pro, his words echoed those of the salesman and the buyer. “There are many good business
reasons to come to Anaheim this January including, the best networking and education opportunities found anywhere as well as being the first to see the latest gear that consumers will want in the year ahead,” he said. “But at the end of the day, everyone in the global music products industry comes to the NAMM Show because it is simply one of the most important and enjoyable things they do all year.”
