EVENT PREVIEW NAMM

level two of the convention centre. For those that want to go back to the roots, Thursday is Boot Camp Day in the HOT Zone, with an array of courses geared towards foundation level instruction in music technology and business. With the HOT Zone, NAMM is extending its

pro audio reach and vying to make Anaheim as essential an offering for engineers and contractors as it is for retailers. Those who would like to participate in the

H.O.T. Zone educational offerings must be NAMM Members. To obtain a NAMM membership, please visit NAMM’s membership page at namm.org/membership to complete an application. If you do not meet the membership qualifications, please email corporatebuyer@namm.org. Be sure to reserve a badge before the December 15th deadline, as after this date the badges are $25 each and must be picked up at one of the ‘Will Call’ stations on the show site. NAMM is also hosting the annual TEC awards

for the second year. The Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards recognises the achievements of audio professionals and the individuals, companies and technical innovations behind recordings, live performances, films, television, video games, and other media. TEC Awards nominations are made by a panel of industry professionals and voted upon by members of various professional organisations and audio industry websites. The awards are divided into two categories: Technical Achievement and Creative Achievement. There is also the Hall of Fame, where pioneers of audio technology and the music industry’s most accomplished producers and audio technicians are recognised. On top of this, the Les Paul Award pays tribute to musical artists and others whose work has exemplified the creative application of audio technology.

CORE COMPETENCIES While the HOT Zone and TEC Awards enjoy their second year at NAMM, the MI show is now in its 109th year and is everything an MI trade show should be. Business oriented, a hub for the trade community, a source of educational offerings and, last but in no way least, an awful lot of fun. It has been said many times before that

ON THE half hour every day, from 10:30am to 5pm, the NAMM University Ideas Centre will be holding talks and presentations all aimed at making working in the musical instrument business more profitable and efficient. The centre can be found at Booth stand 5501 in Hall B. The topics covered in the 14 daily sessions are too numerous to cover here, but they will deal with topics such as ‘right and wrong retail’, ‘selling yourself to the banks’, guerrilla marketing, ‘how to get a crowd into your store’, hiring staff, purchasing strategies and customer service.

It has been said many times before that California in January is a good place to be – a blissful escape from the sharpness of the European winter.

European winter (and northern American states, of course), which is a perfectly valid reason to get over there. It is also the perfect shot in the arm for the coming year as America does what

BRIGHT IDEAS AND NEW APPLICATIONS

These sessions bring in large crowds and the booth becomes as much as a hub for the retailer looking for something a little more as it is the place to pick up new knowledge. NAMM’s all-new App and Gaming

Pavilion welcomes this growing market of hi tech companies to exhibit at the NAMM Show for the first time and connect with the music products industry. Just as other important groups have merged and blended in and around the MI industry, this exhibit is set to create new strategic relationships within the industry and help build more buzz around everything that the NAMM

Show offers. App and gaming companies looking to participate in the pavilion can read more about this opportunity on the NAMM Show website. The pavilion offers a special

introductory fee for companies looking to dip their toes into this untapped (for them) corner of the business world. With more apps and games becoming centred on music and music making than ever before, this pavilion could well evolve into an important element of the show in future years – so this is an excellent opportunity to start building those kind of relationships early.

America does best and injects the feel good factor into the industry, but don’t be fooled into thinking that there is anything other than a serious business orientation to the proceedings. Next month’s MI Pro NAMM preview, which

Visitors will be able to see the gear in action thanks to an extensive line up of live acts

will be ‘live’ at the show with extra distribution, will cover as much of the stand- by-stand information as can be fitted onto the pages, but as a precursor to that, this month I spoke to one salesman and one buyer – both regulars at the show – to ask why the NAMM Show is important to them. Music Sales, Europe’s largest sheet music publisher, is always present at Anaheim, although usually under the auspices of its US
