results of themid-termelections in theUSwill have an effect onthe air cargomarket.Myownfeelingis thatwewill keepon seeing growth. But oil price and dollar parity are going to be important factors.”

Inwhichregiondoseeyouseeparticulargrowthinthe air cargobusiness likely tooccur?

“The hotspots are likely to be Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Bangladesh. We are going to see Africa catching up, with upgradesbeingmade inthe air cargoinfrastructure across the continent, and we are also going to see improvements in South America. “If you look at the last two years, you see India going from

a service industry culture tomanufacturingandthat’s amajor shift. InBrazil, wehave just addedaweekly B747-400 freighter fromDubai to São Paulo. “We already have B777 bellyhold capacity to the city, but

this is our first scheduledmain-deck capacity into the South American continent.”

Are there any service areas that will see particular growth?

“The speed of delivery required to bring new technology to themarketplace isdrivingthe air cargoindustry. We aregoing to see a huge demand in the cool chain and the transportation of pharmaceuticals is verymuch in demand. “My feeling is that the whole market will grow, but there are alwayswild cards out there andwe need to be prepared.”

Howvaluable have you found the introduction of the ‘paperless’ IATA e-Freight initiative to the air cargo industry?

“The increased use of technology hasmade usmore efficient …andthis iswhywe are soexcitedabout e-Freight. It isgoing to be an advantage not just for Emirates SkyCargo but for everyone in the supply chain. “We aregoingtosee a lotmore energy inthebusiness and

e-Freight will be an important part of this vitality. The 21st century is a very different place. The future iswherewewant to be.”

Emirateshasplacedhuge orders tobuilditswidebody passenger fleet; howis your freighter fleetplannedto grow?

“Wewill get onemore B777-200 freighter in the third quarter of 2011 and another in the first quarter of 2012 ... and then

we have a lotmore capacity coming later in the formof the newB747-8F. Some of the newcapacitymay be used to replace aircraft

in the existing fleet and some could supplement it.We are leaving this choice fluid at the moment, as we need to see howthemarket develops.”

Is the air freight infrastructure in Dubai able to keep pace with the current rate of growth at Emirates SkyCargo?

“The new Dubai World Central (DWC) Al-Maktoum International airport is open and freighters are starting to go there. These freighters will not at the moment include the SkyCargo fleet because our core capability is in the bellyhold capacity of the passenger fleet and we need to have the connectivity (of having both fleets at the same airport). “We still have our old terminal and we will gain more as

businesses are relocated to the north side of the airport or to the newairport. “DWC has roomaround it in which the air cargo business

can growand there are notmany airportswith that capability.”

There are always wild cards out there and we need to be prepared”
