NEWS EU ban drives Safi to lease option

JAPAN AIRLINES (JAL) has restructured, with each department newly classified as a profit generating unit – including the airline’s cargo and mail division – or as a business support unit. Each new department is responsible for its own operations and results.

BOEING HAS DELIVERED its 900th B777 aircraft, a B777-200LR that is the first of five B777s ordered by Ethiopian Airlines in 2009.

HAWAIIAN AIRLINES took delivery of its third A330- 200 earlier this month. November has also seen the carrier launch daily flights between its Honolulu hub and Tokyo-Haneda airport.

RUSSIA’S Transaero Airlines reports a total of 31,936 tons of cargo carried for the first 10 months of the year, a 40.1 percent increase on the same period of 2009.

SAFI AIRWAYS, the Afghan airline headquartered in Kabul and Dubai, says it has been hit hard by the recent EUdecision to ban all Afghan-registered aircraft fromits airspace. Because since 23November

it has not been permitted to operate its own aircraft into the country, Safi is using wet- leased B757 aircraft from a Spanish carrier on the services it offers from Frankfurt into Kabul. According to the airline’s

CEO, Werner Borchert: “What makes this ban espe- cially hard for us is the fact that the EU Commission has on several occasions confirmed

that it does not see a safety risk in Safi’s operations.” To resume the Frankfurt ser-

vice with its own aircraft as quickly as possible, Safi has notified the EU Commission that it is “currently in discus- sions to acquire a European airline”. It can then re-register its own aircraft and so not be restricted by theEU’s blacklist- ing of Afghanistan-based carriers. “Operating Safi Airways as

a European airline is not such a major step for us,” Borchert explained. “We have always operated

our services in accordance with EU standards and the Safi

Group already has European subsidiaries. Our aircraft are maintained by Lufthansa Tech- nik ... and we employ mainly European pilots, managers and technical specialists,” he added.

Safi offers scheduled and

charter services, also providing cargo space on its flights. It maintains connections

between the cities of Frankfurt, Dubai and Kabul.
