NewsWeek LAN adds new freighters

LAN CARGO has brought forward the implementation of its plans for expansion, exploiting an increase in demand for freight capacity in Latin America. Three B767-300 freighters

have been taken on lease, the first of them arriving at the beginning of this month (November). The second is expected nextmonth, the final one in January next year. LAN has also confirmed

that it is to purchase a fourth B777 freighter, an aircraft that it expects to receive before the end of 2012. The B767-300 freighters

are expected to increase LAN Cargo’s freight capacity by

about 15 percent for the 2011 calendar year, the carrier said, while the two B777Fs being added in the second half of 2012 will significantly expand capacity yet further. By the end of 2012, LAN

and its affiliates – ABSA, LANCOand MAS Air – are expecting to have in operation 10 B767-300Fs and four B777Fs, as well as two B767F aircraft under sub-lease to a third party. Cristián Ureta, general

manager of LANCargo, com- mented: “The accelerated delivery of these aircraft is the result of strong growth and the company’s ability to quickly react to such market demands. “We are very optimistic

about the results and prospects of the business,” he observed. “The addition of these aircraft will allow for an increase in capacity and connectivity, as well as a further consolidation of the network of LANCargo and its affiliates.” The expansion in the air- line’s cargo-carrying capability

comes at a favourable time. LAN has just revealed that consolidated income earned from its freight operations reached US$910.6 million in September, up by 48.4 percent over the same month of 2009. The carrier said that the

growth was mainly due to a rise in freight traffic, “which increased by 28.2 percent as a result of the economic recovery and continuous growth of the import - export markets of Latin America”.

Quito gets new international airport

A 3,700-ACRE new interna- tional airport being planned for Quito will make the Ecuadori- an capital an evenmore attrac- tive commercial proposition for international airlines looking to expand services into this fast- developing region. With the first stage of devel-

opment planned to be opera- tional by November 2011, the facility will improve connec- tions

Europe and the rest of Latin Page 2 to North America,

America, with an increase in flight numbers and cargo load capacities. With a 4,100-metre runway

capable of handling 44 opera- tions an hour, the gateway will have a freight capacity of 270,000 tons a year. Growth at the existing air-

port in Quito has been ham- pered by its altitude and short runway, which restrict large aircraft to about 60 percent of their total capacity on take-off.
