ACF2010Review Avient seeks opportunity
In Amsterdam, Sam Smith, commercial director at all-cargo carrier Avient, was enthusiastic about the potential of this year’s ACF event to help grow the company’s business. She noted: “We feel there
were some great opportunities. At this event you can see so many companies all in the same place.” Smith noted that Avient is
awaiting the award of itsBelgian air operator’s certificate (AOC). The application was driven by the airline’s relo- cation in September this year to Liège airport and the AOC will enable Avient to consolidate its European presence. The freight carrier has plans to acquire more
MD-11F aircraft next year that will fly under that AOC, she said. “But we will keep our African operations ...
it’s important to have both continents,” Smith concluded.
UPS aims to profit from the recovery
Charles Cocci was in Ams- terdam in his capacity as a member of the host com- mittee of Air Cargo Forum 2012 – which will be held in Atlanta – and as vice presi- dent, global air freight services for UPS. On behalf of UPS, he
explained: “I am here to meet upwith existing airline partners, as well as other carriers that we may one day work with. This event is great because a lot of the people that we deal with come here.” The policy is obviously
a Christmas peak this year, but it will be a manageable one,” he noted. There will also not be the
problems seen last year of under-capacity in the Far Eastern market, notably out of China, when there was a last-minute rush for space on freighters. Cocci added: “Airlines

paying dividends. Prior to talking to ACW, Cocci had just finished discussionswith a carrier that led to “a good business opportunity”, he enthused. Both 2008 and especially
2009 may have been “unprecedented” in the scale of calamity, but UPS has benefited fromthe recovery. By July, however, things seemed
to be slowing down, Cocci observed, espe- cially out of China to Europe. “Therewill be
had the discipline to remove space from the market (during the crisis) and they have been judicious about putting it back in.” For next year and beyond: “We’re very interested in the
China domestic market,” he said. There is a real culture of ‘Go West’ in China now, with industry moving into the interior
to places like
Chengdu to take advantage of lower costs. “It’s too early to tell if we will build a new hub at places such as this,” he said. Instead, UPS could use Chinese carriers or
even fly there from the two existing UPS Chinese hubs at Shanghai and Shenzhen.
Baluch: TIACA benefits frombook launch
TIACA board member Issa Baluch – founder of Dubai- based Swift Freight and a former president of FIATA – held a book signing during Air Cargo Forum 2010 and immediately donated the pro- ceeds of his book sales at the show to The International Air Cargo Association’s education programme. The publication, entitled
Transport Logistics: The Wheel of Commerce,
is co-written by
Baluch and Charles Edwards. The first part of the book
examines logistics-related issues that relate to the recent eco- nomic crisis, while the second part of the work presents 11 logistics activities and illustrates the

impact of transport and logistics operations on the economy and social wellbeing. Jim Edgar, head of TIACA’s
Education and Research Com- mittee, noted: “We greatly appreciate Issa’s very generous support of our new education programme, which is in addition to the time and expertise he offers the association as a member of the TIACA board and on our committee. “As well as helping to sup-
port our education programme, purchasers (of the book) will gain valuable insight into fac- tors that impact our business
and lessons that can be of great use in the future,” he added.
