There’s Always Sarnia

In Sarnia, Ontario, where Lake Huron flows into the St. Clair River, we paddle year- round. Who needs Iceland? We have icebergs—okay, ice floes. We surf our kayaks on sandy beaches, even have a sunken ship, the Gladstone, an 1888 wooden bulk freighter sunk as a breakwater in 1923 off the beach in Lake Huron. Under the Blue Water Bridge to the United States the current is fast and, on a day with a north wind, makes a great play spot for a sea kayak. You can get ocean-size waves. We also have Great Lakes freighters that pass right beside you. Take a look.

I am a regular subscriber to Adventure Kay- ak. As far as I’m concerned it’s the best kayaking magazine around. The articles are very interesting and the price is very reasonable. Keep it coming please!

Where Should I Go?

I am looking for assistance. I am a 21-year- old professional from Scotland, U.K., and am looking to take some time out next year to pursue some kind of kayaking ex- pedition, hopefully lasting a few weeks as opposed to smaller holidays consisting of a few days. I’m looking for something that isn’t for an expert but will provide a lot of thrills along the way. Could you suggest any places?

Have you considered Sarnia?—Ed.

Fit to be Tied I realize that maximum effect was sought in the ad photo in the Fall 2006 issue fea- turing an elegant German automobile with a fine kayak on its roof. But I immediately noted the missing safety lines. I’m sure they were cropped out. I have just returned from my annual paddling trip to Cape Cod, where it seems every third vehicle is hauling one or sever- al kayaks. I was appalled at the truly scary number of people who think it’s okay to fly down the road without —Continued on page 10
