A Goot Buy, “Eh b’y?”

What do kayaking, Canadian government, and copious amounts of Alexander Keith’s Pale Ale have in common? For paddlers in Nova Scotia, a celebration of the govern- ment’s purchase of nearly 700 hectares (1,730 acres) of coastal islands, shoreline and inland waterways from private stake- holders. MNR minister David Morse said, “Much of our culture was shaped by our proximity to the sea….[These purchases] ensure that future generations benefit from our rich culture and traditions.” With an additional 168 hectares (414 acres) on the slate for April, the total cost will be over $5 million. Money well spent, agrees New Brunswick paddler Doug Scott: “Hav- ing access to these islands is great news for Nova Scotia sea kayakers.”

Carbon-Neutral Kayaking

Leading by example, organizers of the Canoecopia paddling expo have elevated a material-conscious event into a poster child for climate change awareness. To compensate for the greenhouse gases pro- duced by the event, organizers purchased carbon offsets from the Chicago Climate Exchange. The exchange works by selling credits to carbon producers to fund devel- opment of renewable energy projects and provide breaks to energy suppliers using “green” sources. Wondering how to off- set the global warming impact of buying a new kayak or taking a spring road trip? Follow the “carbon neutral traveler” link at http://www.rutabaga.com/canoecopia.
