same months of 2009. However the company points out that it took the opportunity to undertake routine maintenance of its docks during September and this is one of the reasons why the yard repaired less vessels. In general, the vessels that were docked

came to the yard for class renewal. However, HUD reports a growing number of enquiries for the installation of ‘cold ironing’ shoreside electricity generation systems. Notable projects carried out by HUD
in 2010 so far have included exchanging the crankshaſt on a 6RTA58 main engine onboard the bulk carrier Alberta while afloat. Tis involved welding liſting eyes on the engine room deck head, for hoisting up the engine A-frame, and then moving the A-frame into the cargo hold forward of the engine room. The fore bulkhead of the engine room
had to be opened up for access and rails were erected in the cargo hold, through the bulkhead opening, to connect with the main engine. Te A-frame was disconnected from its base-plate and then hoisted-up so that it rested on the rail. Te crankshaſt was then replaced and the A-frame was pushed back to the engine for re-assembling. Te fore bulkhead was re-built with the necessary piping and cables. According to HUD’s general manager
Philip Lee: “We are proud we could finish this job in 48 days and this project showed our high level of skill in engine and machinery works.” Also this year, HUD completed the major
docking repair of the cruise passenger ship Star Aquarius in April. Mr Lee says: “We were complimented by the owners and manager on the quality of repairs carried out, as well as the spot on time delivery which allowed the vessel to sail without any delay.” Competition from nearby PRC shipyards
has put HUD under considerable pressure in recent years. As Mr Lee points out: “Tey get the advantages of low labour cost and mega yard infrastructure. To compete with
