Goltens sets up specialist ballast water service centre

A new facility in Rotterdam is to become the centre of excellence for Goltens’ worldwide Ballast Water Treatment installation services .

T

he Goltens group has confirmed the formation of a specialist Ballast Water Treatment (BWT)

centre of excellence, which will be equipped to undertake BWT installations on a global basis. Goltens Rotterdam will spearhead the group’s BWT activities, and will provide training and a specialist installation team. According to Goltens’ President, Paul

Friedberg, the BWT centre in Rotterdam will bring together advanced technology with experienced engineers and assembly crews. It will carry out the design and planning of BWT retrofit projects together with the vessel owner and equipment supplier. Installation work can be carried out anywhere in the world, he points out.

Goltens estimates that the cumulative

investment requirement for ballast water treatment systems will reach around US$30 billion within the next ten years. Around 60,000 vessels must be fitted with type-approved BWT systems up to 2020, driving ‘massive’ demand for system orders. But Mr Friedberg warns that retrofit

projects can be quite demanding due to crowded engine rooms and existing vessel configurations covering pipes and electrical systems. He says: “A major slice of BWT business is the retrofit market, but fitting existing ships with new BWT technology and systems will pose some challenges. System suppliers, shipyards and shipowners can rely

on Goltens Rotterdam and our global network to receive comprehensive specialised support for the installation and maintenance of even the most innovative BWT system application.” The company sees a growing demand

for specialist repair and maintenance services amongst ship owners and ship managers. “By outsourcing BWT system installations to a trusted global provider such as Goltens, shipping companies can concentrate on their core business, safe in the knowledge that their fleets will receive rapid BWT system response and service from Goltens’ worldwide network,” adds Maarten Jeronimus, managing director, Goltens Rotterdam.
