chemical and product carriers as well as in offshore applications. Both are based on proven technology and include

a patented hysteresis clutch for elimination of slippage and false starts; an optimised turbine with high-tech, wear-resistant ceramics for improved power transmission and prolonged machine lifetime; and an isolated oil-free gearbox located above deck for easy removal without exposing the tank to the atmosphere. Other design improvements include a robust gearbox construction with fewer wear ing parts and advanced sealing technology. Alfa Laval suggests that the i40 S single-nozzle

machine with its helical cleaning pattern may be more appropriate for section cleaning, for tanks that require a longer throw length, or for the ability to adjust the pitch angle and rotation speed during operation to optimise a cleaning cycle. Te i40 D dual-nozzle machine, on the other hand, may be the right choice when saving time is of paramount importance. Tis can prove to be less expensive for every cycle over the long run, depending on the cargo type the company says. Te nozzles of the i40 S and i40 D come with a

standard factory-preset rotational speed. Although the preset speed is applicable for most cleaning operations, it is also easy to adjust the speed to match the tank cleaning task at hand.

at the yard, allowing it to handle vessels up to this weight, without tying up the the company’s drydocks. Colonna’s Shipyard is also better able to accommodate emergency lifts ensuring quick-turnaround for customers. According to chief executive, Tom Godfrey: “With

the Marine Traveliſt 1000C, we have complete flexibility, and our land can accommodate 12 parallel vessels in any sequence. We can schedule vessels according to exact repair needs and return them to service rapidly.” Using the 1000C Marine Traveliſt system, Colonna’s

Shipyard is capable of liſting many vessel types. Tese include US Navy and Coast Guard patrol craft and specialty vessels such as casino and dinner boats.

Ancillary equipment Robust underwater

attachment system Te French company Suprameca has launched a new attachment system designed to assist with underwater vessel operations. Suprafix is a brand new attachment process designed by Suprameca, using a powder actuated tool for fixing and anchoring underwater at depths of up to 150m. Several applications for the new system have been

identified. Tese include sacrificial anode attachment, ship hull repair and vessel refloating. A special light has been put on the sacrificial anode

application, while tests have been conducted with the French Technical Centre for Mechanical Industry to verify the strength of the attachment when working at several angles. On the mechanical part, under static loading, the axial tensile strength is said to be greater than 40KN. Under dynamic loading, the time resistance is greater than two million cycles of alternating stress from 0.65KN to 6.5KN. As far as the electrical part is concerned, electric

resistance is stable and below 0.150mΩ. Furthermore natural ageing and hard configuration tests (with cathodic protection at -1500mV) have shown the attachment is not altered through ruptures or cracks, the company says. As a result of these features, Suprameca believes that

underwater divers will have access to a more robust and reliable method of attachment.
