wished Tom Hadley, another announcer, was there because then he always rode well. So, I started making stuff up and the coaches suggested that I announce the College Rodeo. I was opposed to the idea until they said, ‘we’ll pay you’ in which I responded, ‘I’ll try anything once,’” explains Polhamus. Starting his career in October of 1985, Polhamus could have never imagined the success he would attain behind a micro- phone. Since his first announcing event at the College Rodeo in Uvalde, Texas, Polhamus has announced at some of the most prestigious events in the country. After 25 years of announcing, the coals

are still burning hot for Polhamus. He has been the announcer for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada 13 times and an alternate announcer five times. For three consecutive years (2007,

2008, 2009), Polhamus was voted the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Announcer of the Year. “This was the greatest personal gratifi-

“He had to work very hard to get where he is at now. In order to become the best at your profession, you have to work extra hard and be the person everyone can depend upon, maintain your roots and can’t become a superstar. That is Boyd.” - Chris Curtis, Polhamus’ wrestling coach

tions degree or strong rodeo background that Curtis believes sets Polhamus apart from other announcers. “You don’t get those awards unless

people think you are the best. The thing about Boyd though, he does not let it go to his head. He gives all the people in his life the credit, when really, he is the one doing all the work,” explains Curtis. Prior to this nomination, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association honored Polhamus as the Announcer of the Year in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Curtis knows as well as anyone the dedication that Polhamus exerts when it is in terms of his passions. “He had to work very hard to get where

he is at now. In order to become the best at your profession, you have to work

extra hard and be the person everyone can depend upon, maintain your roots and can’t become a superstar. That is Boyd,” said Curtis. Honored to be the announcer at the College National Finals seven times and the Texas Circuit Finals 10 times, Polhamus has made his mark. Traveling nearly 300 days a year, Polhamus feels blessed to meet so many great people in his profession. The PRCA offers numerous opportuni-

ties for youth to experience the sport of rodeo, as a spectator and competitor. Please check out the web address at
