Boyd Polhamus has been working as a rodeo announcer for the past 25 years. Continued from page 37


Curtis has seen the heart, dedication, leadership and toughness that character- ize Polhamus. “He’s one of the toughest kids I’ve ever coached who always believed in a team effort. Boyd was always a leader, never said no and would be the guy keeping after the super start to encourage the rest of team and make them better as a whole. He was a tough, honest kind of person who always put everyone else first. You could depend upon him all the time, no matter what,” said Curtis. Beginning the unique lifestyle of a cow- boy at an early age, Polhamus’ passion has always lied with the cowboys and what they represent.


“Cowboys represent what is best about America. It is a unique American sport. I enjoy watching young people enjoy their success while showing the rugged indi- vidualism and self-reliance,” said Polhamus.


Based on his passion for rodeo, Polhamus and his father organized and ran a bull riding competition every year in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The purpose of this event was not to make a profit, but

rather to allow a World Class rodeo to be presented to the people in southwest Wisconsin. It was their honor to host an event that would provide an opportunity for cowboys to compete.


Polhamus continued to ride at the col- legiate level in Texas until he embarked on his successful journey of announcing.


While a competitive cowboy in college, Polhamus never envisioned himself as an announcer. He got his first gig pretending to be a rodeo announcer in his college’s practice arena.


“I was pretending to be an announcer. There was a cowboy on my team that
