oing Yoga shouldn’t hurt. Much of what is taught as Yoga in the West is actually just a form of exercise with no attention to the individual needs of the student. This results in an increasing number of Yoga-related injuries and overuse pain conditions. The first principle of Yoga is non- harming. Yoga students shouldn’t have pain or stiffness after class. If so, they have been doing some sort of “stretching,” but it isn’t Yoga if the result is pain or discomfort. The DSR Clinic
Sanity Yoga D
specializes in helping people mod-
ify their practices to avoid harm and the pain that follows. Matthew J. Taylor, PT, Ph.D. is the national expert on Yoga injuries and their prevention. Following a detailed history and evaluation of the students’ movement abilities, they are taught how to adapt postures and which ones to avoid for their safety. Once students understand their limitations and the modified forms, they can continue to practice in a class setting or at home with safety and confidence, experi- encing the healing effects of true Yoga without pain.
The DSR Clinic is in Scottsdale at 92nd and Shea. Contact 480- 699-4867 or

The HANDLE Approach A
s a Pediatric RN, Kimberly Lauger’s job was to help sick chil- dren get better; what she loved was supporting their development. Years later, Lauger’s fourth child was born with a complex congenital syndrome called CHARGE syndrome. With no hearing, little vision, and the inability to eat by mouth, there were many obstacles to young Dylan’s develop- ment. With the help of the HANDLE®
Kim with Camila Rose (Holistic Approach
to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency) Approach, Lauger learned to support his development in spite of these obstacles. Lauger says, “As a nurse I was taught how to support normal growth and development. HANDLE taught me what to do when that development took another path.” One of Lauger’s clients says, “My 13-month-old
daughter, who has vision and hearing loss, was unable to hold her head up unsupported. With the HANDLE Ap- proach, in 3 months she was sitting on my lap, holding up her head and looking around. I am amazed at the change.” Today, Lauger is a Certified HANDLE Practitioner and
Instructor working with clients individually in her Tucson office and teaching parents and professionals across the country. Free community information events are available in Tucson and in Phoenix.
