Integrative Therapy and Cancer

as cancer, and with good reason. Over 150 people are diagnosed with cancer every hour; over 1500 people die from cancer every day; the treatment usually results in incredible suffering and loss of independence and dignity. Despite the fact that billions of dollars and untold resources have been devoted to cancer research, conventional medicine has failed in its “war on cancer”. This is due to the fact that cancer is not a “thing”, an en- emy, that has invaded our bodies but rather the body’s own effort to protect us. Cancer, like all “diseases,” comes from the body’s efforts to re-establish homeostasis (balance). In fact, the chemicals (cytokines and interleu- kins) produced by tumors and those produced by healing wounds are very similar: both stimulate tissue prolifera- tion (growth) and angiogenesis (new blood vessels). Hence, cancer has been called “the wound that wouldn’t heal.” We tend to overlook the real na- ture of cancer because conventional science and medicine ignore the source of all healing: nature. Heal- ing is a process of nature. Whether one desires to prevent, treat or handle competently the “side” effects of conventional cancer care, nature’s requirements for healing must be met. This restores the vitality of the whole person and ensures the production of new, optimally functioning cells. The program should include these three

steps: fi rst, teaching the person how to stop making cancer; second, target- ing and eliminating the cancer while causing the least amount of harm possible; and third, rebalancing and enhancing the immune system. The fi rst step, teaching the person
how to stop making cancer, involves a number of factors. These factors include: eating a variety of vegetables and fruits (low sugar content), nuts and seeds; avoiding the consumption of animals and substances produced by animals; eating foods that are free of poison; eating foods that are the same or as close to the condition that they were produced by nature; getting regular, daily exercise and regular, daily periods of rest; staying close to the cycle of “night and day” when sleeping and obtaining an adequate amount of sleep; drinking pure water; maintaining honest and genuine relationships with family, friends and coworkers; laughing as much as pos- sible throughout your day; being kind; spending as much time as possible in natural surroundings (gardening is ideal); devoting a specifi c time each day to prayer and meditation; under- standing that cancer is a divine tap on the shoulder to modify your course; and being grateful for the opportunity to achieve your potential and become an inspiration to others. The second step, targeting and
eliminating cancer, is achieved through a thorough knowledge of the biochem- istry and pathophysiology of cancer; the employment of medical therapies

that utilize this knowledge in order to eliminate cancer through existing, natural targeting mechanisms; and the avoidance of substances that harm healthy cells, as far as is possible. The third step, rebalancing and enhancing immune function, comes about by using only those natural sub- stances (i.e., medicinal mushrooms) that have been proven to balance and increase the cells responsible for human immune function; following all the steps required to stop making cancer (step 1) since these foods and activities are well known to enhance immune function. Walking the path of these three
steps allows us to live consciously while dealing with cancer, maintain- ing an awareness that is independent of the disease. Conscious living not only permits each person to achieve their potential but permits the rest of nature to function as it was designed: fl awlessly.
