TOURISM

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world economy and according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), it was projected to grow to US$8 000 billion worth of economic ac- tivity and create 328 million jobs globally by 2010. Tourism in Uganda is one of the primary sources of foreign exchange, high-end employment and investment.

Tourism has the ability to contribute to develop- ment which is economically, ecologically and so- cially sustainable, because it:

• has less impact on natural resources and the environment than most other industries;

• is based on enjoyment and appreciation of lo- cal culture, built heritage, and natural environ- ment, and as such the industry has a direct and powerful motivation to protect these assets;

• can play a positive part in increasing consumer commitment to sustainable development prin- ciples through its unparalleled consumer distri- bution channels; and,

• provides an economic incentive to conserve natural environments and habitats, which might
