responsibility for her own design jobs onsite, and was offered full-time employment after graduation. She is a firm believer in bringing the different parts

of the engineering community together to deliver a more balanced solution. She is also committed to further research and development within the field, in particular reducing the amount of energy used by services and creating alternative methods.

Michael Gardner Coventry University and Pick Everard

Michael Gardner was awarded a first class honours degree in Building Services Engineering. His final year dissertation was entitled: ‘Life Cycle Considerations in Boiler Room

Design’, studying how boiler room design and sustainability concerns can be intertwined. He made the point that designs for longer life of building services plant are not recognised by sustainability indexes – saying that they should be. His dissertation states: ‘BREEAM only looks at the

life cycle of a building as a whole and not the individual services. Modular boiler rooms are offered as a way of providing long life expectancies, increased reliability and ease of servicing.’ He has an engaging personality and an ability to

communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds – from site workers to managing directors – with equal ease.

Mike Slessor University of Cambridge and Buro Happold

Mike Slessor has worked on a number of significant projects, most notably in the development of the Estidama Pearl Rating System (Abu Dhabi’s equivalent to LEED/BREEAM) since

graduating from Cambridge with an MEng and joining Buro Happold in Dubai. In developing the specific requirements for Estidama, Slessor liaised with relevant government agencies and

stakeholders to understand the policy objectives and embed their aspirations in the rating system. Estidama was released in April 2010 and its requirements are compulsory for all new projects within the Abu Dhabi Emirate. Slessor has worked on projects both in the UK and

abroad, including modelling the largest district heating network planned in the UK since the early 1980s to assess its economic and environmental viability. He is a qualified BREEAM Assessor and LEED

Accredited Professional. He is a graduate member of CIBSE and associate member of the IMechE. Last year Slessor was also the energy officer on the IMechE Greater London Region Young Members Panel.

James Wood Brunel and 8build James Wood was awarded a first class honours Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Mechanical Engineering earlier this year. He achieved 22 A grades out of 23 modules throughout

the five-year sandwich course. During the course he completed a self-designed

project in which he investigated the feasibility of a Sterling engine micro-CHP system for a small urban residence, achieving an A grade. His level five MEng group project involved the

design and fabrication of a reactive high pressure and temperature diesel spray test chamber. This project was also awarded an A grade and the Crown Europe Prize for Excellence in Design Work in an MEng group project. Since joining 8build as graduate engineering

manager he has been given sole responsibility for the management and delivery of the M&E commissioning of the company’s most prestigious project, valued at around £15m. l

Judging will take place at the IMechE on October 7. Entry to the graduate award judging and ASHRAE lecture is free. The YEN evening reception is by invitation only. For more information visit www.cibseashrae.org
