Getting the BEST from training n
CIBSE is working with BEST (Building Engineering
Services Training), the leading UK training provider for the building services engineering sector, to launch a new development route with professional recognition for apprentices. The scheme, supported by
CIBSE, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), will allow Level Three apprentices to receive professional accreditation as engineering technicians after completing qualifying criteria, laid down by the Engineering Council. Apprentices will then be able
to continue their professional development within their trade, and ultimately receive a degree or masters qualification. This scheme provides a more
practical and clearer framework for linking apprenticeships with a career path and progression to higher education. Mark Brenner,
The new development route will give apprentices a clearer career path
chief executive of BEST, said: ‘This initiative is about preparing for the future and ensuring the growing professionalism of our industry.’ Laurence Aston, CIBSE education, training and membership chairman, and director of Buro Happold, added: ‘In these times of uncertainty it’s a fantastic effort by BEST and its partners to generate so many opportunities for the development of craft apprentices to achieve
professional membership of CIBSE and Engineering Council registration. CIBSE is delighted to be a part of this programme and will be very active in its implementation.’ To support the launch, BEST will
organise and pay for the first year’s membership subscription of the appropriate professional institution for all Level Three apprentices starting in 2010/11.

Soft Landings Down Under
The CIBSE Australia and New Zealand region is presenting a keynote speaker seminar series in November. Soft Landings – the next big thing
in delivering better buildings will be presented by Roderic Bunn, building analyst for BSRIA. He will explain what BSRIA’s Soft Landings framework is all about, looking at how this tool will ensure both clients and occupiers get the best out of their new or altered buildings. He will look at the drivers
behind Soft Landings, such as identifying credibility gaps between design intention and operational outcomes, the link between energy use and occupant satisfaction, and the components of building performance. The seminar will also include
a step-by-step tutorial on the five Soft Landings’ stages, from project inception to the extended aftercare period and post occupancy evaluation of projects. Most of the seminars will run
