What does climate change mean for you? n
This year’s CIBSE Annual Lecture will be presented
by Professor Mike Hulme on the theme ‘So what does climate change mean for you?’. Hulme, professor of climate
change at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, explains: ‘Climate change is not “a problem” waiting for “a solution”. It is an environmental, political and cultural phenomenon that is reshaping the way we think about ourselves, about our societies and about humanity’s place on Earth.’ Based on some of the ideas contained in his recent book, Why we disagree about climate change, his lecture will dissect the concept of climate change – where it came from, what it means to different people in different places, and why we disagree about it. He will use the different standpoints of science, economics, faith, psychology, communication, sociology, politics and development to understand why we disagree about global warming. Professor Hulme was a director
of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research from 2000 to 2007. His work explores the

Microgeneration consultation
Further to the August update, the government has progressed the consultation process for the new microgeneration strategy for England. It plans to issue a draft strategy document for review in October 2010, which is currently being formulated through a number of working groups. CIBSE has attended a working
group on quality and one on advice, and the minutes from these meetings are now available at
www.cibsejournal.com
www.cibse.org/consultations We would welcome your
comments, particularly any evidence of how the microgeneration certification system is working and on how better impartial technical advice can be offered to consumers on microgeneration. Send your comments via the website, or by email to
anenadovic@cibse.org We will be consulting on the draft strategy document in late
October with a workshop to be held at CIBSE. Email to register your interest in attending. You will also find details of
other current consultations that CIBSE is involved in, and details of how you can get involved. This can be a good way of networking and can be counted as a part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We also post details of CIBSE responses to consultations on the website.
