Fire chiefs call for urgent review of risks from timber framed buildings
■
An urgent review of the Building Regulations is
required following a series of fi res in timber-framed buildings in England, according to the Chief Fire Offi cers Association (CFOA). Two recent blazes in Peckham
and Camberwell, both in south London, and one in Basingstoke, Hampshire, have all resulted in fi re damage to adjacent buildings. The Basingstoke incident, which occurred last month, involved a timber-framed four-storey complex under construction. The use of timber frame as a
method of construction, together with other innovative construction products and techniques, has increased markedly in recent years, the CFOA says. It is increasingly concerned that
a fi re involving a timber framed building under construction may result in loss of life. It wants the Department for Communities and
suggests that, in buildings under construction, fi res in timber-framed buildings have a much greater chance of spreading than in those with non-timber frames. Nicole Hoffmann, technical
director at fi re engineering and risk management specialists Kingfell, said that while there were clearly dangers surrounding timber- framed buildings under construction, many of the risks were mitigated once the buildings in question were completed. ‘There is a defi nite move towards
the use of more timber in buildings, so we would urge a review of the facts at the earliest possible opportunity,’ Hoffman said. She added: ‘If measures need to
