USA Triathlon has signed the Pledge of Sustainability with Athletes for a Fit Planet, a USAT official supplier, for the Age Group, Sprint and Elite National Championships. USAT has pledged the following:
100 percent online registration
Provide information to athletes about a ride-share option on the event website Provide recycling bins at the event
Race shirts made from organic cotton, recycled polyester, bamboo or other environmentally friendly material
Provide race bags that are recyclable and/or reusable
At least 80 percent of all marketing and participant communications facilitate through email or website updated instead of paper mail Reuse at least 80 percent of all signage for the event
At the 2010 USAT Age Group, Elite and Sprint National Championships:
Each athlete will receive a reusable cooler bag filled with race materials and not a plastic goodie bag. Event T-shirts are made out of recycled polyester and bamboo produced by Green Layer, a USA Triathlon official supplier USAT is encouraging sponsors to give an item for the bag and not paper flier or brochure. The event program is printed on recycled paper by DocuMart. Hotel Capstone, the event’s host hotel, has a guest re-use program for sheets and towels, only washes full loads of linens, uses environmentally friendly cleaning products and prints all of the in-room materials are printed on partially recycled paper.
The portable toilets provided at the event have moved to “green” products and are no longer using harsh chemicals. The city of Tuscaloosa will be handling the on-site recycling efforts by providing and managing recycling bins for plastic and aluminum. Each athlete will be provided a
re-usable finish gift at the finish line instead of a finish medal. C M Y CM MY CY CMY K
