The iconic Sydney Opera House (SOH) has been used to test the feasibility of BIM for the exchange of data between applications in facility and asset management. One of the motives behind the choice of SOH was credibility. If SOH could demonstrate the benefits of BIM then it would be possible to use it on less complex as well as new building projects. As the SOH’s construction predated the


CAD-era, there were no digital models of SOH’s structure. An objective was, therefore, to create one and then to add various properties about the spaces, rooms, furniture and other features. The results of the study have been seen at first hand and show how BIM can work for existing buildings, even highly complex structures.


Accessing the benefits


BIM allows a single representation of a building to be created and managed across all life cycle phases to support and coordinate the work of different disciplines. The model provides an unambiguous reference for all data and information and a dynamic, real-time, 3D environment with which to manage, first, the project and, second, the asset. BIM software is available from major CAD


vendors and there is sufficient expertise in the design community to apply it successfully. There is also a growing collection of buildings that have been delivered, and which are operated, using BIM. The remaining challenges are not in


relation to the technology, but in overcoming scepticism and inaction. Dr. Brian Atkin, is director of The
