designers can now access and work with this valuable information alongside geometry and simulation data from their engineering software, and apply the combined data in new ways.

Initial implementations are for

the Pro/Engineer CAD system from Parametric Technology Corporation and the Abaqus/CAE software from the Simulia brand of Dassault Systèmes. Users of these systems can connect securely across a corporate network to the corporate materials database, find the right materials data, and apply it to a CAD or CAE model. www.grantadesign.com

Lighting design and analysis Beacon Concepts has introduced Brandenburg’s Lucid Shape 1.9 to the Americas. The lighting design and analysis software package reduces product development time by 30 to

50 per cent. The new LucidShape 1.9 release has many new features and improvements, such as in-core multithread simulation for Monte Carlo and light mapping, improved speed in raytrace with accurate NURBS and with Triangle/NURBS, and new surface tessellation algorithm for graphic display and ray trace. It also features a new application menu structure with ‘design feature’ offering, and a new design feature for backlighting and optimisation. This release provides for several improved simulation techniques. First, there are now three different simulation methods: the default simulation on NURBS, which is the most accurate; a fast simulation on triangles and finally a combined simulation of triangles and NURBS. Secondly, the surface tessellation

builds a triangle representation for graphic display and for simulation.

And finally, LucidShape now offers multithread simulation for Monte Carlo and light mapping as in internal process. www.beaconconcepts.net

Collection aids materials analysis Accelrys has released the Materials Studio Collection for Pipeline Pilot, which enables scientific R&D organisations to integrate predictive analytics for materials properties seamlessly into their scientific workflows. Materials Studio Collection extends

Accelrys’ Pipeline Pilot scientific informatics platform to include key materials modelling and simulation tools from Accelrys’ Materials Studio application – offering a powerful combination that greatly increases research productivity across the scientific enterprise. Predictive analytics with Materials Studio Collection allows for a

streamlined approach to materials discovery, improving researchers’ productivity so that scientists can spend more time on innovation and less on costly, unnecessary, laboratory experimentation.

Compared to trial and error

approaches, predictive models enable researchers to explore a broad range of compound candidates virtually, identify those not meeting the required specifications, and quickly narrow the search for the most promising leads. The integration of Accelrys

Materials Studio with the Accelrys Pipeline Pilot platform makes it possible to capture best practices in the materials domain within automated scientific workflows – eliminating human error, improving collaboration, while increasing productivity and research success rates.
