French Atomic Energy Commission solves storage problems

The Military Applications Division (DAM) of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has installed LSI storage system technology in its petaflop-scale data centre, which hosts the Tera 100 supercomputer. With theoretical processing power of 1.25 petaflops, Tera 100 is among the most powerful supercomputers ever designed and developed in Europe. The implementation of LSI storage technology at CEA/ DAM is part of a partnership between LSI and Bull. The CEA, a government-funded research organisation, initiated a programme with Bull in 2008 designed to extend the data centre capability of the Tera 100 supercomputing centre.

SGI partners with Irish HPC centre to provide GPGPU services

The Irish Centre for High- End Computing (ICHEC) is working with SGI to provide consultancy services for General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) based applications. ICHEC will work exclusively with SGI to enable institutions and businesses to accelerate the development of applications that utilise GPGPU systems. Although traditionally associated with gaming applications, the integration of graphics processing for other applications is a rapidly emerging trend. Having largely benefited intensive scientific computing to date, more general-purpose use of

GPU technology is expected to provide solutions to a much broader range of disciplines. Founded in 2005, ICHEC was established as a national high performance computing (HPC) provider with offices in Dublin and Galway, Ireland. Its team of system administrators and computational scientists work with researchers to support the development of internationally competitive computational modelling and research across a variety of disciplines and institutions. In the past year, ICHEC has established a significant team of researchers focused primarily on porting applications on GPGPU architecture.

Swedish technology centre invests in supercomputing system

Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology has ordered a Cray XT6m supercomputing system for its PDC Center for High Performance Computing. The acquisition is part of a national plan by the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) to provide Sweden’s scientists with access to world-class high performance computing resources. The Cray XT6m supercomputer, which uses the new 12-core AMD Opteron 6100 Series processor, will support scientists in a wide range of disciplines, including computational chemistry, bioinformatics, molecular dynamics, computational fluid dynamics and other areas.
