easily by laboratory personnel and operators with minimal training. It also provides enhanced data integrity. The package features customised or template
analysis sheets with breaks between samples for ease of tracking final results, as well as user friendly drop-down menus for adding samples, dilutions, or replicates in building an analysis sheet. Results for samples are flagged in orange when not within the BOD/CBOD data criteria, and all BOD/CBOD results used in calculating the reported BOD/CBOD are colour-coded in blue. All calculations are automated with the press of a button – improving productivity, increasing accuracy and saving time. The ATL XL BOD Master is integrated into
Sample Master Pro LIMS for automated data management. It can also be purchased as a stand- alone solution. As an integrated solution, there are numerous benefits since all data is captured and stored electronically, complete with integrated calculations and error checking mechanisms to minimise transcription errors. Additionally, all data can be stored in a secure master database where data is available for automated reporting, e-mailing or viewing with others in the organisation.

Extended flexibility Sapio Sciences has released Exemplar Lims 4.0, which extends the product’s functions in configurability and flexibility. v4.0 features a fully extendible data model
with support for complex relationships, such as many-to-many relations, all with zero programming, as well as improvements in the built-in querying and reporting tools. There are also improvements in performance and scalability, so a single server instance can now support several hundred concurrent users, and enhancements to freezer management with support for configurable freezers and easy viewing of samples in shelves/racks/boxes.

Design tool for rotating electrical machines Cobham Technical Services has introduced the 3D version of its Advanced Machines Environment, a rapid electromagnetic design tool for rotating electrical machines. The new software combines the extreme accuracy of finite-element analysis (FEA) simulation with a design entry system that creates full 3D models of electric motors or generators within minutes. The software is an application-specific toolbox of the well-known Opera

electromagnetic simulator, and allows users to achieve radical new levels of design productivity and performance. FEA techniques allow users to simulate design
concepts with supreme precision and accuracy, but it can take many hours to build a 3D model of a complex product such as a motor. The 3D Advanced Machines Environment provides a front- end to the electromagnetic simulator that speeds design entry by means of ‘fill in the blanks’ dialogue boxes. Users select the form of motor or generator they want to design from a list of all common types and variants. By simply entering a list of perhaps 10 parameters to define mechanical geometry, material properties and electrical data, the 3D models are automatically created. The complete design entry process can easily be performed in less than five minutes. The new 3D software allows developers to
accurately model an entire machine, providing a comprehensive simulation that takes even marginal factors such as end-winding effects and fringe effects into account. The 3D Advanced Machines Environment
comes with design templates for common rotating machinery including motor types such as AC induction, brushless, permanent magnet and switched reluctance, plus synchronous motors or generators. The 3D version also introduces support for the fast-growing axial flux electrical machine sector – which employs a geometry that cannot be represented in 2D. Users can additionally select numerous design variants for different machine types, such as a choice of rotor styles.

Integrating materials with engineering Granta Design has released Granta MI:Materials Gateway, enabling materials-related software applications through the integration of materials information technology with computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE). Many critical decisions in engineering enterprises
require the use of data and information about materials and their properties. Granta MI is a system designed for managing and applying corporate materials information including: results and analysis from the company’s materials testing, research, and previous project experience; materials property reference data; company- approved property data for use in design; economic and environmental data on materials; the company’s lists of preferred materials and suppliers; and information on the restricted substance status of materials. With MI:Materials Gateway, engineers and
