Growing Globally Since it was started more than 20 years ago, the SC Conference has contin- ued to grow, to evolve and to embrace new ideas, new technologies and new faces. The meeting was first held in 1988 for the simple reason that the small but growing supercomputing community needed a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences. While that premise still holds true, the breadth of top- ics and scope of the conference has grown along with the community. Within a couple of years, networking was added into the conference mix, followed by data issues including storage and analysis.

And the international flavor of the conference has also increased, bringing in new perspectives and new technologies. At SC09 in Portland, Oregon, the 10,000 registered attendees represented nearly 70 nations, from Armenia to Malaysia to Venezuela. Of the 281 companies and research organizations re- serving booth space in the SC10 exhibition, more than 80 are based outside the United States.

Co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Com- puting Machinery Special Interest Group on Architecture, the SC conference

series is the singlemost important meeting place for the HPC community.

What is SC? If you’ve attended the SC conference in the past, you know that it’s on a scale unparalleled by other meetings of the HPC conference. You know that it’s the one week in the year when anyone you want to meet in the commu- nity will probably be in town. If you haven’t had the opportunity to be part of SC, 2010 is a great time to join in. Best of all, you can make the conference whatever you want it to be.

For nearly half of the 10,000 attendees, the SC conference is a thought-pro- voking six days of technical paper presentations, invited speakers, lively panel discussions, challenging tutorials and informal Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, all chosen through a rigorous selection process. For example, the SC10 Techni- cal Papers Committee received 253 submissions, conducted 1,009 reviews, and participated in several days of committee meetings to accept 51 papers that will be presented at this year’s Technical Program. The SC10 Technical Program Committee also selected 33 tutorials that will showcase current and developing practices in the community, giving attendees an opportunity to learn from experts in areas ranging from basic parallel concepts and un- derstanding the performance of HPC applications to advanced techniques for using GPUs. Complete information on the SC10 Technical Program can

be found on the web at: http://sc10.supercomputing.org/

If you are a researcher who is just embarking on a career, SC is an ideal forum in which you can showcase your accomplishments in posters and pre- sentations, meet with established experts in informal settings, hear technical presentations on the latest research findings and also connect with potential employers.

Perhaps the most mind-boggling aspect is the SC Exhibition, the world’s mar- ketplace for high performance computing and networking technologies. In that regard, some consider SC to be a trade show. But when you consider that the booths of the industry’s leaders are interspersed with those of small startups, and then these are joined by many of the world’s leading research institutions and universities, you have a broad-based exhibition that is as

much about selling ideas as it is about selling technologies.

No matter how sharp your focus, you’re bound to meet someone with very closely aligned ideas at SC.
