McLEOD HILDA ELIZABETH McLEOD (Age 96)


A resident of Westminster at Lake Ridge, Lake Ridge, Virginia, died July 13, 2010. She was born January 6, 1914, the daughter of Arnold and Sophia Schindler, on her parent's farm near Valley Falls, Kansas. She married George Robert McLeod of Oakland, California Sep- tember 17, 1942 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Mr. McLeod died March 20, 1991 in Silver Spring, Maryland. The couple had two sons, Glenn of Calverton, Maryland and Stephen of Broad Run, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Meredith Sundlof of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Charles, Susan and Franklin of Virginia. A memorial service will be at Westminster of Lake Ridge, 12191 Clipper Drive, Lake Ridge, Virginia. Services are being provided by Grant Miller - John Cox Mortuary of Oakland, Cal- ifornia, burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum where a burial service will be held at 1 p.m. on July 30, 2010.

Agriculture Retiree


Retired from the Federal Government in January 1993, died at Alexandria Hospital on July 14, 2010. Mrs. McMaster was last associated with the Foreign Agricultural Service as a Program Specialist in the Export Credit Sales Programs of the Department of Agriculture. Mrs. McMaster was a native of Decatur, Alabama, coming to the metropolitan area in 1947. Most of her government career was associated with Agriculture and for many years with the Barter & Stockpiling Division. Prior to coming to this area she was employed in her home town of Decatur with the Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation under contract with the Navy Department, Bureau of Yards & Docks, Arlington, VA and prior to that, with the Decatur Iron & Steel Company. She received her high school education in Decatur and her business degree from Bob Jones College, Cleveland, Tennessee. Mrs. McMaster was an active member of the Falls Church Women's Club and Chapter #401 of NARFE in Falls Church. There are no immediate survivors. Memorial Service will be held at the EVERLY-WHEATLY FUNERAL HOME, 1500 Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2 p.m. Interment private. Of Fairfax, VA died on Monday, July 19, 2010. Bob was a graduate of the University of Illinois and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Most of his professional career was as a writer and editor for the U.S. Treasury Depart- ment. He spent his retirement traveling and participating in various charitable and civic activities including serving on the board of the Fairfax County Department of Consumer Affairs. CONNELLY Capt. ROBERT BAILEY CONNELLY, USN (Ret.)


Connelly and Evelyn Coloney Connelly. He gradu- ated from the US Naval Academy with the 2nd Company in 1952, and married Elizabeth Ann Bayne the following November. He served on the battleship Wisconsin (BB-64) for two years before attending Electronics School and Submarine School in 1955. After two years on the USS Blackfin (SS- 322), he had nuclear power training, and reported to the USS Sargo (SSN-583) which made the first winter surfacing at the North Pole in February, 1960.


On Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in Silver Spring, MD, formerly of Jamestown, RI from complications associated with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, on Septem- ber 10, 1930 to then Lt. Bailey


Commander, Submarines, US Atlantic Fleet, and finally as Chair of Submarine Warfare at the US Naval War College, Newport, RI from which he retired in 1977.


Capt. Connelly was employed by Purvis Systems, Inc. in Newport, RI for several years. He was among the founding partners of The Newport Athletic Club, was a member of the Board of the Newport Armed Services YMCA, and a vestryman and member of Trinity Church, Newport, RI.


Survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Cathleen of Washington, DC; sons, Robert, Jr. of Arlington, VA and Thomas Bayne of Mansfield, MA; and two grandsons, Matthew Gordon Connelly and Samson Bailey Connelly.


Subsequent sea duty was as Commissioning Engi- neer of the USS John Marshall (SSBN-611), Commissioning Executive Officer of the USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) and Commanding Officer of the USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630).

MONAHAN HENRY J. MONAHAN


Harry Monahan, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 after a battle with leukemia. Harry was born in New York City on November 15, 1932, but grew up in Darien, Connecticut, the oldest of three brothers born to Harry and Catherine Monahan. As a teenager, he attended St. Thomas Seminary in Hartford, CT from which he obtained an Associate’s degree before transferring to George- town University’s School of Foreign Service from which he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 1955. He subsequently entered the U.S. Army and graduated from Counter Intelligence Corps School and served in Bordeaux, France. He returned to Washington and entered Georgetown Law School, graduating in 1963.


TREMPER August 23, 1927 RICHARD E. TREMPER, SR. July 3, 2010


Devoted father of Richard E. Tremper, Jr. (wife Lorrie Tremper), Deborah A. Meador (husband David Meador) and Gary M. Tremper (wife Cyndi Tremper) leaves behind nine grandchildren; four great- grandchildren with two more on the way. He also leaves behind Teresa Griffin, his beloved girlfriend of ten years. He served his country in the Navy during World War II and passed on his waterman skills to his children and grandchildren. Richard served the community as a part President of the Lions Club. Richard received the Theodore-N-Vail medal in 1984 in Highland Beach, Florida by saving two youths that were pushed out to sea by the riptide. Richard loved people, watching his grand- children play sports, as well as all major team sports, and to dance. He was always there when his family and friends needed anything. A lot of good memories were made with him, and he will be very much missed. A Memorial Service will be held for Richard Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 8816 Chesapeake Ave., North Beach, MD at 11 a.m. with a recep- tion immediately following.


Harry was employed as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1963 to 1968 then began a solo legal practice, which he maintained until 1981. At that point he was appointed Judge for the District Court of Maryland in Montgomery County. He retired from the bench in 1996. Beginning in 1998, Harry began volunteering with Catholic Charities of Washington’s Legal Network, overseeing their expansion into Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. He received a special recognition from Catholic Charities in 2008 for this and for recruiting more than 100 attorneys to work with impoverished clients on a pro-bono basis.


In addition to his profession work, Harry also served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington, DC. He was a member of the John Carroll Society and the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. The son of an Irish immigrant, Harry was proud to carry passports from both the United States and The Republic of Ireland.


Harry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Eileen Curran Monahan of Bethesda,MD; three children, Kate (David Missar) of Washington, DC, Matt of Tewksbury, Massachusetts and Tim(Chris- tine) of Olney, MD; as well as 10 grandchildren, CJ, Matt, Bronwyn, Justin Missar, Jack Monahan and Madison Kandrotas and Timmy, Molly, Meghan, and Declan Monahan. He is also survived by a brother, John, of Rockville, MD. His brother, Patrick, predeceased him.


Visitation will be held Thursday, July 22 at Gawler’s Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Wash- ington, DC from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m., Friday, July 23 at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St.,NW,Washington, DC.

Our beloved Barbara Wilkening Muller of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away on July 16, 2010 from complication following spine surgery to repair a crushed ver- tebrae caused by osteoporosis. She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Ronald Muller; her son, Randy Naefe and daughter, Wende Maurer; her step- son, David Muller; step-daughter, Dorothy Rue; her brother, Kurt Wilkening; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Barbara was born October 17, 1931 in Detroit Michigan, graduated from Val- paraiso University and after graduation, began working for American Airlines in Detroit.She married Stuart Naefe and after moving to Huntington Valley, PA, spent several years as an elementary school teacher. She moved to Upper Marlboro, MDand worked at the IRS, Prince George’s General Hospital and Southern Maryland Hospital. She became a travel agent and enjoyed traveling the United States, Europe and the Caribbean.She was a long- time member of Hope Lutheran Church, Clinton, MD where she held several Coun- cil positions including President of the congregation. She also worked as the church’s Office Manager. After retiring, she was a volunteer at Southern Maryland Hospital and for Lutheran Marriage Encounter. Family will receive friends at Lee Funeral Home, Inc., BranchAve. and CoventryWay, Clinton, MD on July 27, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held on July 28, 2010, 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 6201 Coventry Way, Clinton MD. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Hope Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
