B6 DAVID WARREN, 85 Invented ‘black box’ flight recorder by Matt Schudel

David Warren, 85, an Austral- ian scientist who invented the flight data recorder, the so-called “black box” that has helped solve airplane crashes and has im- proved airline safety around the world, died July 19 at a nursing home in Melbourne, Australia. The cause of death was not re- ported. Today, black boxes — which

are actually painted bright or- ange or red — are required on all airlines around the world and are built to withstand fire, heavy impact and intense water pres- sure. They have helped investiga- tors examine many crashes and have led to immense improve- ments in airplane safety and pi- lot training. In recent years, the technology has been applied to boats, trucks and, increasingly, automobiles. Dr. Warren was a young fuel chemist when he developed his invention in 1953, after being asked to help investigate the crash of one of the world’s first jet airliners, the British-built de Havilland Comet. The crash in India killed all 43 people on board but was a mystery, Dr. Warren said, “without any expla- nation, without any witness, without any survivors.” The investigation struck a per- sonal chord with Dr. Warren, whose father had died in an un- solved airplane crash off the southern coast of Australia 19 years earlier. His final gift to his son was a crystal radio set, and Dr. Warren retained his child- hood interest in electronics long after he had become a chemist. While investigating the de Ha- villand crash, Dr. Warren imag- ined a novel use for a small pock- et recorder that he saw at a trade show.

Hoach H. Dao TRANSLATOR

Hoach Huu Dao, 91, a civilian

translator and linguist for the Army Department from the early 1950s to 1987, died July 17 at Montgomery Hospice’s Casey House in Rockville of complica- tions from a stroke. He had been a Bethesda resident. Mr. Dao, a native of Hanoi who was fluent in Vietnamese, French and English, began working for the South Vietnamese and U.S. governments while living in Ha- noi and later Saigon. He moved to the Washington region in 1967. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1970. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ngoc Lan Nguyen Dao of Bethesda; four children, Y Lan Dao Tate of Somerset, Ky., Patricia Hazelbarth of Vienna, Don Dao of Washington and Tuan Dao of New York City; a brother; and three grandchildren. —Lauren Wiseman

Joseph E. DeLucien WASHINGTON CHEF

Joseph E. DeLucien, 87, exec- utive chef at the old Trader Vic’s in Washington from 1970 until his retirement in 1985, died July 6 at Virginia Hospital Center in Ar- lington of congestive heart fail- ure. A native Washingtonian, Jo- seph Emil DeLucien served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific dur- ing World War II and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. His mili- tary decorations included the Navy Commendation Medal. He returned to Washington in the late 1940s and worked as a

ing one of these in the plane,” he said in 1998, “and we could find it in the wreckage and we played it back, we’d say, ‘We know what caused this.’ ” Dr. Warren tried to interest his

supervisors in the idea but was told to stick to his examination of exploding fuel tanks. Nonethe- less, he continued experimenting and by 1957 a prototype of the flight data recorder was ready. “I couldn’t get it out of my

mind,” Dr. Warren said. “It seemed so bloody simple.” The ARL Flight Memory Unit

— named after the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Mel- bourne, where Dr. Warren spent most of his career as a research scientist — could record four hours of instrument readings and pilots’ voices on a steel wire. But Dr. Warren encountered widespread scorn from pilots and government officials in his homeland. “It would be like having a spy flying alongside — no aircraft would take off with big brother listening,” an Australian airline pilots group said dismissively. But in 1958, a British aviation

official visiting Dr. Warren’s labo- ratory was impressed with his in- vention and invited him to Eng- land, where other scientists and engineers helped build improved models and put the flight record- ers into production. A reporter dubbed the device a “black box” because of its seemingly mysteri- ous properties. Some U.S. airlines began to use flight data recorders in the late 1950s. After a fatal airline crash in Australia in 1960, a judge rec- ommended that the recording devices be installed on commer- cial aircraft in that country. De- spite opposition from pilots groups, the recorders quickly caught on in other countries. The first person to make an in- flight black-box recording was

chef at the Fairfax hotel during the 1950s and at the old Statler Hilton hotel during the 1960s. He was a consultant to Giant

Foods and helped develop its deli- catessen department. He was a member of First

Christian Church of Alexandria, where he sang in the choir, and had been an Arlington resident since the 1960s. His wife, Marjorie Pennell De- Lucien, died in 2008. Survivors include a brother, Al-

bert DeLucien of Reston, and a sister, June Miller of Hartford, Conn.

Dr. Warren himself. On his flight to London in 1958 to demon- strate his invention, one of the engines of the airplane failed. He turned on his recorder and made observations from his passenger seat. David Ronald de Mey Warren was born March 20, 1925, on Goote Eylandt, a remote island off Australia’s northeastern coast. His father was an Anglican missionary to the aboriginal peo- ple who lived there. The family later moved to Tas- mania, a large island off Aus- tralia’s southeastern coast. After his father’s death in 1934, Dr. Warren attended school in Syd- ney and built crystal radio sets, which he sold to classmates. He graduated from the Univer-

sity of Sydney and taught science before becoming a rocket fuels chemist. He received a doctorate from Imperial College in London and by 1952 was working at Mel- bourne’s Aeronautical Research Laboratories, a branch of Aus- tralia’s defense department. He retired in 1983 as the or-

ganization’s principal research scientist, having spent most of his career studying chemicals, energy and fuels. Dr. Warren led many adult

education classes and was active in a voluntary euthanasia group. He also had an interest in an- tique automobiles and was the founding chairman of the Morris Minor Car Club of Victoria. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth Meadows Warren; four children; eight grandchil- dren; and one great-grandchild. Soon after Dr. Warren pub- lished descriptions of his record- ing device in scientific journals in the 1950s, British and U.S. manufacturers acquired produc- tion rights to the black box. Dr. Warren never profited from his invention.
