A physicist, he spent most of her career with SAIC before teaching physics for Fairfax County Public Schools. As a doctoral at George Mason University, he also taught and conducted research. Mr. Cotton was a well-known local advocate for Gifted and Talented programs in public schools, testi- fying frequently before the Fairfax County School Board and the Board of Supervisors. GWENDOLYN BOWEN-RUMBER Gwendolyn Bowen-Rumber passed away peacefully at Suburban Hospital In Bethes- da, Maryland on July 1, 2010 surrounded by loved ones. "Gwennie" as she was affectionately known, was born March 12, 1950 in the S.E. section of the District of Columbia and remained a long time resident until retirement in 2002. Gwen worked as both a vocational and addictions counselor for several agencies throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area. She had an entrepreneurial and giving spirit- operating a small catering and baking com- pany and often feeding the homeless in her free time. Gwen is survived by her four children; Cheryl D. Bowen, Robert E. Turner Bey (Beverly), Kevan E. Bowen, Kenneth O. Bowen (Tasha). Three siblings; Cassandra D. Chijioke, Pamela A. Bowen, Henry O. Caroline Chastain passed away on June 20, 2010 in Evansville, Indiana after a valiant 11 year bout with cancer. The pride of Carol's life were her children. Mary Bernice Cissel, 85, of Leesburg, VA, went to be with the Lord on Sunday morn- ing, July 4, 2010. Bernice was born on April 10, 1925 in Wardensville, WV, a daughter of the late Hugh M. Heishman and the late Cora Virginia Frye Heishman. As a young women Mary was a teacher in Maryland and West Virginia, but her most proud occupation was a homemaker and mother of six children. She was predeceased by her husband Wil- liam Durney Cissel, Sr. in 1994, and three of her children, David H. Cissel, Laura Lee Cissel, and Jean Lynn Cissel. She is survived by her three children, Susan Lightwater of New Orleans, LA; William D. Cissel, Jr. of Leesburg, VA, and Kelly Quertermous of Purcellville, VA; her brother: James Hugh Heishman of Catlett, VA; her daughter-in- law, Carol Cissel of Murrells Inlet, SC; and three grandchildren, James Cissel, Shawn Reynolds, and William David Cissel. Colonel Jack Hawxhurst, USA, (Ret), 88, a resi- dent of Springfield, VA died on July 3, 2010. He was born December 6, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Clarence O. and Emeline Jesperson Hawxhurst. Married Gloria Croft June 11, 1946, Salt Lake City, Utah. Colonel Hawxhurst entered active military service in 1941 and served until 1946. During WWII, he was assigned to Army Engineer units in the U.S., North Africa and Italy. He was recalled to active duty in 1950 and after serving in various command and staff assignments in the U.S., Germany and Korea, retired in 1969. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and four Army Commendation Medals. Survivors, widow, Gloria Hawxhurst; son, Captain Jack M. Doris Moore was born in Hedelfingen-Stuttgart, Germany, March 13, 1937, the daughter of Walter and Marta Schwaemmle. She passed away on June 30, 2010. She spent her early life in Esslinger, Germany. After graduating from high school, she attended a vocational school. Doris joined the Salvation Army and her lifelong service and compassion for others began. Doris met George Moore while he was serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. They fell in love and married on September 22, 1961. They had seven children, 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Doris and George moved to the United States in 1966. In 1976, Doris became an American Citizen. Doris' career over the years marked her love for people and food. She served thirteen years caring for the sick and elderly as a nurse's assistant. The last twenty years, she worked in the food service industry as a baker. Doris retired in 1999. Doris was known as a "giver". She often put the needs and well being of others before herself. Over the last nine years she had the privilege of caring for her husband. Doris thanked God for being able to care for him. She saw it as a true labor of love. The gift of giving and helping others is a virtue she passed on to her children. For this we celebrate the life of a virtuous woman that has touched the lives of so many.A celebration of Doris' life will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 10-11 a.m. at the Belvoir Chapel, 5950 12th St., Fort Belvoir, VA, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
