$1.6Million Americorps Grant Awarded to College


A NEW AMERICORPS GRANT of $1,606,527 will enable Springfield College to continue to help Greater Springfield schools and nonprofit organizations meet human needs for the next three years.The grant will support eighty-five students per year who become AmeriCorps members,with each contributing 900 hours of community service.Mostly graduate students, they will provide services consistent with their fields of study that are targeted to community needs. Their services help school children; individuals and

families receiving physical and mental health services; and organizations recruiting, training, and managing volunteers. Springfield College AmeriCorps services for school children include academic coaching for 600 students; counseling, advising, and outreach for 300 students; and out-of-school leadership development programs for 185 youth.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE is a featured installation in the new Museum of Springfield History,which opened in October.The museum includes exhibits that describe Springfield’s development as a manufacturing center, focusing on its industries, transportation, inventions, education, and more. The Springfield College exhibit highlights important


contributions made to the city—and to the world— for more than a century, including the invention of basketball, its partnership with the YMCA, Olympic connections, community engagement, and faculty research. In addition to large display panels that tell the College’s history through pictures and text, a number of College artifacts are also on display, includ- ing a copy of “basket ball” rules from 1893; the electro- goniometer, created by Dr. Peter Karpovich G’29 to study motion and athletic performance; and a letter from Martin Luther King, Jr., H’64 to the College. The Museum of Springfield History is at 21 Edwards


Street in Springfield. It is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $12.50 for adults, $9 for seniors and college students with identification, $6.50 for children ages 3-17, and free for children two and younger, as well as for all Springfield College faculty, staff, and students.

study abroad destination was shifted from Canada to Springfield College.They had been impressed by the success of their colleague, Frachra Power,who credited his landing a plumb job in athletic training in Ireland to the skills he gained during a semester at Springfield College last year. As fourth-year undergraduates in


athletic training, they are pursuing an ambitious semester at Springfield College with twenty hours of clinical experience and twelve course credits. “We’re getting exactly the kind of


hands-on experience that we were looking for, and we’re supervised by athletic train- ers,” said Greene.Nic Amhlaoibh added, “The facilities are so professional, and we also work with physicians and others in the field.”


Carter Leads Football to 42-13Win in ECAC Northeast Championship Bowl


LED BY Most Outstanding Player Josh Carter, the Springfield College football team, in the College's 1000th game, bettered a pair of old school records in defeating Plymouth State University, 42-13, in the ECAC North- east Championship Bowl, on Nov. 21, at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. In the process, Head Coach Mike DeLong won his 150th game at Springfield College.The Pride is now 3-0 in ECAC Championship games. Springfield College, playing football since 1890, ended its season at 8-2.The win elevated the College's all-time foot- ball record to 517-428-55—making it an even 1,000 games.
