Dear Friend of Springfield College: ON SEPTEMBER 3, the College officially launched its milestone 125th anniversary to the theme of “Celebrating 125 Years of Great Ideas!” In this issue of Triangle, and in upcoming issues, you will read about some of the inno- vations and innovators that have contributed to our worldwide renown. And, you will learn about some of our “modern-day” innovators, such as Professor Sam Headley (see page 10). To give you a chance to celebrate along with us, enclosed in this issue is a 125-year timeline poster that captures some of the many great achievements of the College and its members for well over a century. Please also visit the CollegeWeb site to learn more about a number of special 125th events that are planned in 2010. To this day, the College remains committed to its found-

ing mission: educating students in spirit, mind, and body for leadership in service to others. Not many colleges today can say they follow their founding mission, but we do. Our mission is as relevant today as it was 125 years ago—if not more so—and, in my mind, it will always be relevant to the needs of society. Our students are commit- ted to the Humanics philosophy, to the College’s mission, and to the ideal of transforming lives and communities in meaningful ways.We continue to provide the best possible learning and living environment for them, and we remain the first-choice institution for seventy-seven percent of our first-year students. In addition, over the past

three years our National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) scores have indicated that the College meets or surpasses the benchmark scores of our peer institutions for six measures of effective educational practice (see page 5). Most agree that the campus has undergone a major

transformation, thanks, in part, to the addition of some outstanding facilities. Undoubtedly, this institution’s campus is one of the nicer ones in New England. I’m pleased we’ve been able to add state-of-the-art facilities to support programs that have long been recognized on this campus. The new campus union opened when the students returned for spring semester. In the next issue of Triangle, you will get an inside look at this marvelous addi- tion to Naismith Green. Renovation on Judd Gymnasia began the first week of

January (see “A Look Back” in your last issue of Triangle). This historic building provides a fitting location for the new Stitzer YMCA Center; the Victorian-style red brick and brownstone facility still prominently displays the “YMCA Training School” logo carved in stone. There will be more to come about the progress of this center in an upcoming issue of the magazine. From the time of its founding in 1885 as The School for

ChristianWorkers to the present day, Springfield College has endured and grown through hard work and the dedi- cated commitment and support of its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. The progress that we have achieved reflects the support of many. I thank every one of this year’s generous contributors, who are recognized in the Gift Report included in this issue of Triangle. On behalf of Springfield College,

I extend our warmest wishes for a new year filled with peace.
