Helen Davis Blake G’67, H’09 Tarbell Medallion


HELEN DAVIS BLAKE served on the Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2009. In May 2005, she became co-chair of the most successful compre- hensive campaign in the College’s history,which closed in June 2008 at a record $44.5 million. Blake and her husband, S. Prestley Blake, provided a leadership gift to the campaign to honor Prestley Blake’s


father, in whose memory the College named Herbert P. Blake Hall. As a member of the College’s Board of Trustees,


Blake was vice chair from 2006 to 2009, and secre- tary in 2005-2006. She was chair of the board’s Committee on Trustees from 2004 to 2007 and the Audit & Compliance Committee from 2003 to 2004. Other board committees on which she has served are: academic affairs, business affairs, develop- ment/institutional advancement, executive, investment, and student affairs. She also served as a corporator for the College from 1984 to 1990. Blake holds an associate’s degree from Quinnipiac


University, a bachelor of science degree from Bates College, a master’s degree in education at Spring- field College, and pursued advanced study at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.


Steven Scott ’72 Distinguished Alumni Award


STEVE SCOTT, chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation service at James A.Haley Veter- ans’ Hospital (JAHVH) in Tampa, Fla., and director of the Polytrauma Rehabilita- tion Center, is one of the country’s foremost experts on veterans’ affairs and osteopathic, spinal cord, and sports medicine. Scott completed his


master’s degree at Pennsyl- vania State University and doctoral degree at the


Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.He served his internship at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine, and his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,Minn.There, he went on to become the administrator of the Sports Medicine Program, and

rose to medical director and assistant medical director of physical medicine and rehabilitation outpatient services. Scott has been at the JAHVH since 1990.He has


also served in several positions at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, including as assistant professor, division director for physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) in the depart- ment of neurology, and program director of the PMR residency program.


Richard J.Wood ’99, G’01 Young Alumnus Award


RICHWOOD is an assistant professor of exercise science at Springfield College, a certified athletic trainer, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, a published author of scientific papers, an award- winning researcher, and an expert on the role of diet and exercise in the treat- ment of chronic metabolic disease, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease,Type


II diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in athletic


training and master’s degree in strength and condi- tioning at Springfield College,Wood earned his doctoral degree in nutritional sciences at the University of Connecticut, and also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in obesity and diabetes at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, he is the principal investigator on a


study examining the effects of low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets,with and without resistance train- ing, on preserving lean mass during weight loss in overweight men with metabolic syndrome.


Thomas E. Yeager ’72, G’75 Distinguished Alumni Award


TOM YEAGER defines his passion as college athlet- ics and the advancement thereof. In a stellar thirty-five-year career, he has risen from a youth physical director, and through a series of ascending positions at Springfield College and the National Collegiate Athletic Associa- tion (NCAA), to become the first commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Associa- tion (CAA). Yeager holds a bachelor’s


degree in physical educa- tion and master’s degree in


education from Springfield College.At Springfield College, he served as a faculty member, assistant to the director of athletics, and assistant men’s gymnastics coach, until the NCAA captured him.He is the original author of most of the NCAA’s academic rules, and was the NCAA staff liaison for committees on eligibility, academic requirements, foreign student records, and special presidential research on Proposition 48. Yeager became one of the nation’s youngest Divi-


sion I commissioners when he was named to lead CAA in 1985.He is responsible for the overall administration of the CAA and its staff of seventeen members, television and championship negotia- tions, budgeting,marketing and promotions,media relations, fund-raising, and NCAA regulations.

THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS were selected for induction into the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame for their outstanding achievements on and off the playing field, and for service, dedication, and commitment to athletics.The Hall of Fame was established in 1972 by the Class of 1933 to honor such members of the College community.


Paul Assaiante ’74


ASSAIANTE was a two-time captain for the men’s gymnastics team in 1973 and 1974, and in 1974, was tabbed an All-American and named to compete for the U.S. in the Pan American Games. But, it was on the squash courts that Assaiante left his mark.He won theWorld Hardball Doubles Championship in 1988 and captured the U.S. Squash Doubles Hardball Championship in 1994.He was also crowned the U.S. Singles Champion in the United States Squash Rac-


quets Association (USSRA) 50+ age group in 2004. Since 1994, Assaiante has been at the helm of


both the squash and tennis teams at Trinity College and has put his squash program into the national spotlight.This spring, Assaiante led the Bantams to its eleventh consecutive College Squash Association National Championship.His teams have won 202 straight matches, the longest active winning streak in intercollegiate varsity athletics in any sport. From 1999-2003, Assaiante coached both the U.S. Squash Team,which competed in the Pan American
