Exhibition preview Mach 2010

Manufacturing technology showcase

MACH 2010 will be a key showcase for manufacturing in the UK on 7-11 June 2010, Halls 4 and 5, NEC, Birmingham. Offering a range of metal cutting, metalforming and associated technologies, services and equipment, the MACH 2010 exhibition has already attracted over 400 exhibitors and is on track to bring thousands of visitors to Birmingham

T

he last time this biennial show took place in 2008, MACH received more than 27,000 visi- tors keen to see the very latest in

manufacturing technologies and to purchase such technology. Estimates suggest that well over £150million of sales were made as a direct result of the show. Even in 2008, with an eco- nomic cloud on the horizon, MACH successfully bucked the trend with a 22 per cent increase in visitor numbers over the successful MACH 2006. “MACH has proven that it is still

undoubtedly the market leading manu- facturing technologies show in the UK and the interest from exhibitors and visitors is a strong demonstration that confidence is returning to the UK engi- neering-based manufacturing sector,” says Graham Shearsmith, MACH organiser for the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA).

New at MACH 2010

This year, MACH boasts several new zones, such as a Supplier zone, Grinding Solutions zone, Solutions for Business zone and an Education and Training zone. The new Preferred Suppliers zone will showcase the UK’s subcontracting sector. Featuring solely UK subcontractors, the zone aims to encourage visitors to use British sup- pliers. The Grinding Solutions zone will cover all aspects of grinding and metal finishing from the latest produc-

tion machines and grinding wheels to deburring, honing, abrasives and pol- ishing. The Solutions for Business Zone is an entirely new venture for MACH and will provide visitors (and exhibitors) with a number of business advisory services, offering information and assistance on all aspects of com- merce and industry.

Encouraging market signs

An independent survey commissioned recently by the MTA indicates that a huge proportion of visitors to MACH 2010 plan to purchase new manufac- turing equipment over the next three years. When asked how much they plan to spend, over 83 per cent said up to £250,000 in the second half of 2010 and nearly 71 per cent were expecting to spend the same again in 2011. The MTA commissioned the inde-

pendent survey to assess how many visitors are expected at the show and whether or not they plan on purchas- ing capital equipment. The survey was sent to a broad section of MACH 2008 visitors and the results are overwhelm- ing - MACH 2010 visitor numbers are expected around the same levels as 2008, with a huge proportion planning to acquire new manufacturing equip- ment in the second half of 2010 and throughout 2011. • Over 91 per cent of people responded positively when asked if they intend to visit MACH 2010, with 61.5 per cent

saying they definitely plan to attend. • 75 per cent of people agreed when asked if they believe MACH 2010 is the best place to find new suppliers of manufacturing equipment. Of that number, nearly 20 per cent would strongly agree. • 78 per cent plan to purchase new capital equipment over the next three years, with over 94 per cent saying their decision will be influenced by their visit to MACH 2010. • 88 per cent said the new equipment is to improve existing manufacturing processes, to expand current capacity, or to replace existing equipment.

New exhibitors

Over 60 new companies have booked stand space for MACH 2010 since the start of the year. The influx of stand bookings has provided a real boost to the exhibition. These companies have taken a further 1,200m2 of space at the show, which is now over 90 per cent sold. The surge in stand bookings comes as

Supersonic car gears up for MACH 2010

he Bloodhound supersonic car will join the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre’s Manufacturing Transporter and the British Gliding Association’s Simulator as major features within the exciting new Education and Training Zone at MACH 2010. Exhibition organisers, the Manufacturing Technologies Association, will launch the Education & Training zone at this year’s show as a means to attract young people into manufacturing, and demonstrate what a future of engineering may have in store for them. A key draw will be the Bloodhound jet-powered vehicle, which aims to break the world land-speed record and the 1,000mph barrier during a three-year project. Schools and colleges have already begun registering their attendance at MACH (free at www.mach2010.com/education)

where the Bloodhound education team, led by director, Dave Rowley, will explain the technology behind the car during their five-day residency in the Education and Training Zone. Bloodhound runs its own inspirational education programme for primary and secondary school-aged pupils, and for students in further and higher education.

Automation MAY 2010

MTA surveys suggest a more positive picture for the industry with increases in order books reported by a number of companies. In addition, wider reports state the recession is ‘officially’ over and many commentators are expecting a UK recovery in the second quarter of 2010 - perfect timing for MACH.
