Palumbo prepares to take on Malta yard
T e Naples-based Palumbo shipyard, which specialises in passenger vessel repair and upgrade work, is making preparations to take over the Malta Shipyards’ ship repair facilities in Cospicua, following their privatisation by the Maltese government.
T
he Maltese yards closed as a state-owned entity in March this year, and are expected to
reopen shortly under Palumbo group management. Having these additional, well-equipped
shipyard facilities will greatly strengthen Palumbo’s position as a shiprepair and conversion specialist, as it will be able to off er a network of yards in the central Mediterranean. Currently the company operates a 70,000tonne drydock facility in Messina, that measures 267m x 38m, and two fl oating docks in Naples, the biggest of which has a 6000 tonnes capacity and is 120m in length. By comparison the biggest of Malta’s drydocks can accommodate vessels up to 360m in length and 300,000dwt, and so Palumbo will be able to target a much wider range of vessel types and sizes than it can at present. T e acquisition of Malta Ship Repair
will raise Palumbo’s profi le internationally and will give the company access to a strategically well located facility in the centre of the Mediterranean, with little deviation required for many shipping lines. Over the course of the next few months, the company expects to bring
