the decks onboard the cruise ship, Discovery. As part of a recent refurbishment programme, around 3400m2 of floors in the ship’s public areas and 300 cabins were upgraded. Damaged areas on the decks, including holes up to


35mm deep, were repaired by the specialist flooring contractor, Team-Marine, which installed F.Ball’s Stopgap 1050 Lite smoothing underlayment to level irregularities within the surface, while Stopgap Blue Bag 114 floor smoothing underlayment was also utilised on areas such as restaurants, the medical centre and health and fitness centre. Styccobond F44 adhesive was used to install the vinyl floor coverings in the ship’s medical centre and yacht club and Styccobond F3 to stick the carpet to the underlay.

Two coats of anticorrosive paint were applied on the touch-up and repair areas, followed by a tie-coat and a topcoat. Finally, any overlapping areas were removed with high pressure fresh water, and a full Hempasil X3 topcoat was applied. Tis was a long and time-consuming process.” With Hempasil Nexus X-Tend, touching-up and


repairing damaged areas is a much smoother process and the coating is claimed to have better adhesive properties than any other single product of this type.

welding system Te Dutch company, Kranendonk Production Systems, has received a major order for a pioneering robotic flange welding system, designed for welding bespoke pipe constructions in the marine and other industries. Te system has been developed to incorporate four ABB simultaneously operating robots and the latest vision technology to position, tack and weld a wide range of flanges and welding sockets. Optionally the system can be equipped with cutting and drilling functionalities. By integrating offline programming soſtware with the current CAD/CAM system drastic cost savings will be realised at the work preparation department, Kranendonk says. IHC Piping will take delivery of the first robotic


flange welding system at facilities in the Benelux countries and Germany. Paul Dits, director, says, “It will help to improve the weld quality, the flexibility of production, and the cycle and delivery times for the pipe sections. Tese benefits will be passed on directly to our expanding customer base and provide us with a distinct competitive advantage.”
