Jurong secures pre-conversion contract from Petrobras


Te Sembcorp Marine subsidiary is to carry out another project for Brazilian oilfield operations.

urong Shipyard, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, has secured a contract worth approximately


Sin$130 million to carry out pre-conversion works on the VLCC Suva which will be renamed FPSO P62, for Petrobras. Te scope of work involves steel renewal in


the hull structure, new steel works, blasting and painting, the renewal, fabrication and installation of piping, the supply of new equipment and some extensive refurbishment of the accommodation units. Te vessel is


scheduled to depart the yard in the second quarter of 2011 and is destined for the Roncador Field, which is one of the largest oil fields discovered offshore Brazil. FPSO P62 will be capable of processing more than 180,000 barrels of oil per day and will have a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil. Jurong Shipyard is one of the leading yards


in this field, with a long track record in the conversion of tankers to FPSOs and FSO. To date it has delivered 11 units for Brazilian oil fields alone. Te yard is, furthermore,


currently working on two VLCC to FPSO conversions for Modec; one is the Odoh which will be delivered as FPSO Kwame Nkrumah by mid-2010, and the other is the PSVM, ex Bourgogne, which will be handed over in the first half of 2011. According to Sembawang, Brazil is the


most active region for future floating storage and production projects, with 34 potential projects being discussed. West Africa has the next most potential followed by South East Asia and the Gulf of Mexico. SRCT


RINa reveals risk analysis rules


Genoa-based classification society RINa has published a new set of rules covering offshore units, including FPSOs.

Drilling Units came into force in March this year and are supported by a Guide for Risk Analyses and a Guide for Technology Qualification Processes. Paolo Salza, head of RINa’s marine division


technical department, said: “While existing rules cope well with the current series of projects, which essentially marry together existing technologies, we need a new framework which will allow for the advance technologies which will be deployed in future projects.” To help operators, designers and builders use the new risk analysis approach, RINA has


published appropriate risk analysis guidelines which describe the most typical approaches and techniques used in the offshore field. Te new rules cover classification and surveys, hull and stability, machinery, systems and fire protection, materials and welding, service notations and additional class notations. SRCT


LNG FPSO concept brings MHI and BW Offshore together


Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has reached a potentially significant agreement with BW Offshore.

ne of the world’s leading FPSO contractors, BW Offshore, is to collaborate in the marketing of the


FPSO concept for LNG projects with the Japanese shipyard group, MHI. Te joint initiative aims to develop design


concepts and propose to the market LNG FPSO units with around two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) production capacity. Specifically, MHI will take charge of the vessel’s hull and LNG storage tank portion and BW Offshore among others will be responsible for


the pretreatment and liquefaction facilities and production and mooring solutions. Te focus of the MHI and BW Offshore collaboration will probably be on newbuild FPSO LNG installations. However conversion projects have not been specifically ruled out. SRCT
