Mellowed Medications

Local group Medications had a well-earned reputation as one of Washington’s most ferocious live acts during the middle part of the last decade. Its performances were full-throttle, sternum-shaking affairs, filled with jagged twists and turns with the grandeur of arena rock and the full-on intensity of punk rock. But some time off and lineup changes have mellowed the band on its new album, “Completely Removed.” There used to be only rare moments when listeners could catch their breath. Now, the songs have more room to breathe, with melodies coming through more clearly but without

sacrificing intensity. // 9 p.m. Thursday. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. 202-667-4490. www.blackcatdc.com. $10.

What is the patio at Galaxy Hut

all about? Is it different than the previous little alley?

FRITZ HAHN: It’s actually off the alley, behind the building itself, in what used to be the keg storage area out back. One keg, tapped like you’re at a friend’s back- yard cookout, one cooler full of canned beer. The drafts in the alley bar are always differ- ent from what’s available inside, and cans are available inside only occasion- ally.
