Ryan Church’s two-run ho- mer put Pittsburgh ahead in the sixth inning, Andy LaRoche added a solo shot and the Pi- rates bounced back from a poor trip to beat Chicago and Ryan Dempster. Pittsburgh dropped seven games during a season-long 10-game trip and had lost 10 of 13 overall before withstanding solo homers by Alfonso Sor- iano and Geovany Soto.

new york — Even before rookie pitcher Brian Matusz’s ill-fated throw to first base in the fifth inning, the Orioles appeared to be doomed after three of their best players had opportunities to break open a game and they all swung-and-missed.

Oriole pitchers simply have no margin for error as Ma- tusz found out again Tuesday night when his poor throw to first cost the Orioles another game that they had every op- portunity to win. New York scored the go-ahead run in a 4-1 victory before an announced 43,260 when Matusz tossed Ramiro Pena’s sacrifice bunt attempt into right field, but that was just one in a series of inept moments that showed the Orioles for the last-place team that they are.

Baltimore (7-20) continued to come up painfully small in the clutch, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring posi- tion. Their latest poor offensive performance could be summed up by the top of the third inning after pitcher A.J. Burnett’s throwing error on Cesar Izturis’s sacrifice bunt attempt brought home the game’s first run and put run- ners on second and third with no outs. Burnett fanned Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Matt

innings, and became the 16th opposing starter in 27 games to pitch at least seven innings against them. The Orioles, meanwhile, have scored just two runs in 18 innings of the series. In five games against the Yankees, who will go for the series sweep Wednesday afternoon be- hind Andy Pettitte, the Orioles have totaled just 10 runs, and five of them came in their only victory against New York last Tuesday.

⁄3

Wieters in succession on a total of 17 pitches. The Orioles then had a runner on second with two outs in two other in- nings and couldn’t convert as Burnett improved to 11-2 against them in 15 career starts. He allowed one unearned run, five hits and walked two while striking out eight over 7 1

Renowned broadcaster Harwell dies

Longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell, beloved by generations of fans who grew up listening to his rich voice, Southern cadence and quirky phrases on the radio, has died after a months-long battle with cancer. He was 92.

Tigers spokesman Brian Britten said

the Tigers learned of Harwell’s death from his agent. Harwell, who called Detroit Tigers games for four-plus decades and was acquired by the Brooklyn Dodgers for a catcher, announced in September that he had been found to have inoperable cancer of the bile duct. Then 91, he took the news with characteristic poise, say- ing he planned to continue working on a book and other projects. “Whatever happens, I’m ready to face

it,” Harwell told the Associated Press on Sept. 4, 2009. “I have a great faith in God and Jesus.” Shortly after Harwell’s announcement, the Tigers honored him during the third inning of a game against Kansas City, showing a video tribute and giving him a chance to ad- dress the crowd at Comerica Park. “In my almost 92 years on this Earth,

the good Lord has blessed me with a great journey,” Harwell said at a micro- phone behind home plate. “The blessed part of that journey is that it’s going to end here in the great state of Michigan.” Harwell died Tuesday at his home in Novi, about 30 miles northwest of De- troit, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Tigers did not have addition-

al details about his death. Harwell spent 42 of his 55 years in broadcasting with the Tigers. He was their play-by-play radio voice from 1960-1991 and 1993-2002. The team and its flagship radio sta-

tion, WJR, allowed his contract to ex- pire after the 1991 season in what be- came a public relations nightmare. Then-Tigers president Bo Schembe- chler, the former Michigan football coach, took the blame. WJR general manager Jim Long later took responsi- bility for the unpopular move. When Mike Ilitch bought the fran- chise from Tom Monaghan, he put Har- well back in the booth in 1993. Harwell chose to retire after the 2002 season. By his own count, Harwell called more than 8,300 major league games, starting with the Dodgers.
