Doris M. Preston
GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE
Doris M. Preston, 93, who re- tired in 1971 as an administrative officer for the Defense Communi- cations Agency, died April 25 at the Emeritus assisted living center in Arlington County. She had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was born Doris Moulton in
Burlington, Vt., and grew up in the Washington area. She graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington and later from Stray- er’s Business College. During World War II, she served in the counterespionage division of the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA. After the war, she worked as a legal secre- tary for the Arlington firm Ball and McCarthy. In the 1950s, she moved to Eu- rope with her husband, a CIA em- ployee. While living in Germany and France, Mrs. Preston served as a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross and later became its di- rector of volunteers. After return- ing to the United States, she worked for the Defense Communi- cations Agency, now the Defense Information Systems Agency. She was a former member of St.
John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston. After moving to Arling- ton several years ago, she became amember of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Clarendon. She was a member of the Arling- ton Business and Professional Women’s Club and served as past president of the old National Or- thopaedic Hospital’s auxiliary. Her husband of 50 years, How-
ard J. Preston, died in 1992. Their son, Jay Preston, died April 15. Survivors include her daughter,
Pamela Preston of Vienna; eight grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Melvin Ezell Sr.
MAINTENANCE WORKER
Melvin Ezell Sr., 73, a retired maintenance worker, died April 22 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington. He lived in the District. Mr. Ezell held many odd jobs but worked mostly as a mainte- nance worker. He retired about 20 years ago from the Montana Ter- race apartment complex in North- east Washington. He was a native Washingtonian
and attended Spingarn High School before serving in the Army from 1955 to 1957. His wife, Eileen Holmes Ezell, whom he married in 1960, died in 1975. Survivors include three chil- dren, Melvin Ezell Jr. of Temple Hills, Kevin Ezell of Mount Rainier and Angie Ezell of Washington; two stepchildren, Antonio Holmes of New Carrollton and Adrienne Ezell of Washington; a sister; 17 grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

William C. Bickford
AIR FORCE, USO OFFICER
William C. Bickford, 87, an Air
Force lieutenant colonel who re- tired in 1968 and later spent many years coordinating volunteers for the United Service Organizations, a group engaged in morale-boost- ing activities for the military, died April 25 at Collington Episcopal Life Care Center in Mitchellville. He had cancer.
Col. Bickford, a former Bowie resident, began volunteering for the USO in 1981 and became a paid employee during his 20-year in- volvement with the group. William Christ Bickford was a
native of Lock Haven, Pa., and a 1949 graduate of Pennsylvania State University. He served in the Army Air
Forces in World War II and joined the Air Force in 1950. He spent sev- eral years as a protocol officer and also performed security work. His final active-duty assignment was at the Pentagon. In the 1970s, he worked for the
D.C. government agency that li- censed public hospitals. His work included monitoring the hospitals’ uses of federal funds. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels in the 2000s. His wife, Avalon Evans “Bee” Bickford, whom he married in 1956, died in 2006. Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Townsend of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and a grandson.

Mary Bateman Connell, 99, a re- tired lieutenant colonel in the Army Nursing Corps, died April 6 at Virginia Hospital Center. She had pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

She was told she had only a short time to live but in later years was fond of saying she had outlived all the doctors who had predicted her early demise. Mary Catherine Bateman was born in New Orleans, attended Louisiana State University and re- ceived her early training as a nurse at Charity Hospital in New Or- leans. She also studied at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Barbara J. Rapp, 86, a cashier at
Montgomery College’s Takoma Park campus from 1971 to 1993, died of gastroenteric bleeding April 21 at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wal- kersville, Md. Mrs. Rapp, a longtime Silver Spring resident, was a member of Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Takoma Park. She had most recently resided at an assis- ted living home in Frederick. Barbara Jean Fabel was born in
Hartford, Conn., and grew up in Montgomery County. Her hobbies included making
pottery and ceramics. Her husband, Dr. Edwin R.
Rapp Sr., a dentist, whom she mar- ried in 1946, died in 1984. Their son Edwin R. Rapp Jr. and a grandson died in a car accident in 1998. Survivors include six children,

On May 1, 2010 at Goodwin House, Ed Ham- merbeck, age 89, Col., USMC (Ret.) and former Corp. Secretary of the American Petroleum Institute.
Col. Hammerbeck was born and raised in Duluth,MN. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1942 and enlisted in the USMC and commis- sioned an officer.
He served in combat in WWII (sea), Korea (air) and Vietnam (infantry). He was on the USS Texas at Normandy on D-Day, at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Philippines. He earned the Silver Star in Korea as a tactical air observer. In Vietnam, he commanded the 3rd Marines, the 9th Marines, was G-3, 3rd Marines. He was Assistant Naval Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Sweden, 1961 - 64.
After retirement from the USMC in 1970, he joined the American Petroleum Institute serving as Corp. Secretary until 1986. He then was the VP marketing of Manna Financial Planning.
Predeceased by his wife, Ruth Hammerbeck, of 64 years and their son, 2nd Lt. Edward C. Hammerbeck, USMC, 1969, Vietnam. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Cahill and son- in-law,T. James Cahill.

Entered into eternal rest at his home in Silver Spring, MD., on Friday, April 16, 2010; he was 83. Son of the late Sam and Hattie Middleton Colemon, Moses was born in St. Helena Island, SC. He was raised with his cousin, Mary, by the late Pastor I. H. Middleton and Sister Tyetta Middleton. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. After attending Penn Normal Industrial and Agriculture School, he graduated from Johnson C. Smith College, North Carolina, with a degree in biochemistry, and developed a formula to prevent milk from curdling. He lived in the Washington, DC, area for many years, where he worked at the National Institutes of Health.A faithful member of The Church of the Redeemer, Mr. Middleton served on the Vestry, as a chalice bearer, and founded the Redeemer Seniors Group. He was a Council Member of Episcopal Senior Ministries in the Diocese of Washington.

Died April 23, 2010 at his home inWashington, D.C. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Susan, daughters Sarah and Kate, sister Chris, mother Sonya Schulberg O’Sullivan, son-in- law Jason McCullough, and countless friends. Born in Los Angeles in 1943, he spent his childhood in Washington, D.C., Mamaroneck, NY, and Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Following graduation from Riverdale Country School, he majored in the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, where he was an All- American fencer and a member of the 1964 NCAA championship team. John’s keen inter- est in politics led him to join the national staff of Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 presidential campaign and to become a senior organizer of the 1969 Vietnam Moratorium. He graduated from the NYU School of Law in 1970. During the Carter Administration, John was Chief Advisory Counsel at the Federal Energy Reg- ulatory Commission. A nationally-recognized energy regulatory attorney, John was a long- time partner at Chadbourne & Parke LLP.
