WARREN

RUTH WARREN

In a college course she enrolled in late in life, Ruth Warren was asked to write about herself as if she were a character in a play: “She will never set the world on fire,” she wrote, “and she is somewhat annoyed—and chagrinned—that at 61 she still finds herself searching for the complete answer to the question,‘Who am I?’ But as a character in her family, she was consistent and well defined. She was tender and curious, loyal and giving, more soft-spoken than she said she wanted to be, and wonderfully silly. Ruth died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Country Meadows of West Shore, Mechanicsburg, Pa., where she had resided for the past year. She was 92. Born Ruth Brockett Ingle in Perry, Iowa, her father followed management jobs during the Depression and brought the family to New York, Virginia, Colorado, Maine, Florida and Georgia by the time Ruth graduated from high school. After earning bachelor’s degrees in history and philosophy atWesleyan College in Macon, Ga., Ruth taught high school history, civics and economics in Camilla, Ga., living in a boarding house with other teachers. Upon her marriage to Winton Warren in 1941, Ruth devoted herself to caring for her home and rearing her family in Maryland, where she resided for 58 years. Ruth enjoyed embroidering, sewing clothes and costumes for her kids, and crocheting afghans for her grandchildren. She liked bridge and ping-pong and all kinds of games, read voraciously, researched the family’s genealogy, and collected hundreds of decorative turtles. She made magnificent pound cakes, was a great letter writer, and played the pipe organ and the piano by ear. Ruth was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hyattsville (Md.) and volunteered for church functions, civic groups, Cub Scouts, and Meals-on -heels. She was also a regular blood donor. Ruth had said that her greatest accomplish- ment was “being the mother of three great kids.” “She was extremely gentle and whimsical,” said her daughter, Virginia Haberman. “She was always there from when we were kids, all through her life, whether it was with a Band- Aid or a hug, an after-school snack, offers to babysit or azaleas from her yard.” Ruth’s husband,Winton, died in 2007. In addition to her daughter, Virginia, surviving are her daughter, Nancy Warren, her son, William Warren, D.D.S.; her grandson, John McClure, and four granddaughters, Jody and Tevah Platt, EmilyWarren and Katie Omar. The memorial service was held Tuesday,May 4, at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg.
