High School Racing News: Islands Cup Regatta

Twenty-five four man teams from

eleven high schools competed in the A and B fleet high school sailing regatta at Orcas Island, March 27 and 28, in Vanguard 15s in Westsound. Orcas Island Yacht Club provided the setting for a great event and the weather was mild and dry. Shifty winds and big, slowly oscillating holes made the racing challenging, and the sailors with the best records at the end of the competition were those who were the most observant and anticipated the changes. Due to the variable condition, more than once a sailor who started OCS and returned to restart was able to climb back into the top ten by finish. The strongest performance was by

Jake White of Orcas High who, after 10 races, had totaled only 23 points, for first in A fleet. His teammate Taylor earned a second best 43 in the B fleet for a team total of only 66 points, and the regatta win. Together they held two of the top three scores for the weekend, and they look like strong candidates for the district championship in double- handed sailing. Seattle Yacht Club fielded a pair of great sailors who showed their stamina

by sailing every race, finishing second in the standings, with a total of 112 points. They were third in A fleet with 71 points and first in B fleet with 41 points. Although they were not sailing under the A and B fleet restrictions and ISSA rules, and thus are ineligible to compete in the district championship, they exhibited good skills and adaptability on the racecourse, switching roles in their boat a few times during the regatta. Third place was captured by

Bainbridge High School, who, along with Orcas and North Kitsap, is perennially strong in the NW district. Sean Willerford and crew Peter Carle finished second in A fleet with 63 points and teammates Chase Webber and crew Lea Fetterman were third in the B fleet with 63 points as well for a total of 126. Bainbridge had four teams sailing

in the regatta and finished in third, fourth, fifth, and fourteenth, showing the extraordinary depth that makes them a force in the district. Orcas fielded five teams, finishing first, 19th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. North Kitsap fielded three teams, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth.

Other schools competing included

Olympia, Friday Harbor (2 teams), Port Townsend (2 teams), Portland (2 teams), Central Kitsap (2 teams), Bellingham (2 teams), and Kingston.

Willamette Sailing Club hosts NW District High School Regatta

An open regatta for high school

sailors was held April 3 at Willamette Sailing Club, sponsor of several Portland high schools for ISSA competition. Races began just after 10:30 in a perfect 7-8 knots of southerly, in WSC’s nine 420 class boats with brand new sails. Courses were modified windward-leeward in strong and challenging current and shifting winds. Sailors discovered the importance of staying near the start area and of ranges to assess the effects of the current. In A fleet, 7 and 8 races were sailed in a quickly building breeze and hail shower before B fleet took the course with sunshine and a steady 8-10 knots. A and B fleets each completed eight races. Nine teams were registered, with

North Kitsap fielding 2-½ teams, Bainbridge two teams, Portland two teams, Port Townsend 1-½ teams, and

Kingston one team. Winner overall was NK 2 with 27 A points and 21 B points for 48 total. Sailing for NK 2, A were Charlie Roberts skipper, and crews Lanae Barnum, Nick Saferoes, and Andrew Gunnell. NK B were skipper Alex Vining with crews Whitney Martin, Francis Roberts, and Emma Starnes. Next was Bainbridge 1, with A skipper Captain Sean Willerford and crew Chase Webber at 36 points, and B, a freshman boat with a first regatta skipper, Lea Fetterman and crew Nate Greason, who were only one point out of first in the B fleet at 21, enough to drag their A fleet fifth place boat up to finish at second overall with a total of 58. Third place overall was held by Portland 1 at 61 points, with Bainbridge 2 in hot pursuit at 62. Sailing for Portland 1 were A, Austin Sandifer with Nick Childress and Olivia Recht, and B, Jonathan Cannard with Brian

Hickman. A huge thanks to all the folks at

WSC for putting together a fun and safe regatta. Four WSC sailors joined the adult helpers in running the races and deserve special recognition: Ciara Anderson, Stephan Moran, Sukhu Singh, and Scott Van Bergen. WSC Open Regatta
