T

he Gig Harbor Yacht Club's Islands Race was interesting in that it had

just about all of the wind conditions you could expect in the Sound at one time or another during the race. From dead calm with boats drifting backwards to 25 knot gusts as boats scrambled to the finish, most with light weather sails hoisted. This was the fourth and final race in

the Southern Sound Series. Persistence paid off for the winners as they searched for the best wind after the start, with the western shore of Colvos Passage the favored side. A reasonable southerly

filled in and the fleet made good time to the turn just north of Blake Island. However, the southerly faded on the return just south of Ollala and for some of the fleet a period of drifting away from the finish with Colvos' mostly north flowing current even on the flood. This time the eastern shore was favored. Then as the lead boats were sailing the final few miles to the finish a southerly front hit with frequent heading gusts of up to 25 knots hitting the starboard tack fleet. There was not much warning other than the looming black clouds. Many in the fleet had their lightest and biggest headsail up from the zephyr like conditions just prior to the front reaching the fleet. There were plenty of round ups going for the finish line.
