IN BRIEF
POWER PLAY
According to research published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the more power we have the less accurate we become at predicting time scales for projects – but with power also comes a boost in your levels of optimism.
MIND MATTERS
When it comes to speaking out about mental illness in the office, scores of British workers are still wary – con- cerned about being labelled as ‘mad’ by colleagues and being forced to leave their jobs. A survey from Rethink found that nearly six in 10 workers would feel uncomfortable talking to their managers if they had depression, anxiety, bipolar disease or other mental health condition.
Slash the stress
2
Research from IRS and XpertHR has revealed that over half of HR professionals felt that the economic uncer- tainty has impacted on their organisation’s stress man- agement measures. There’s no doubt that the uncertain- ty of job security, pressure of an increased workload and the general negativity surrounding the recession have seen levels of stress soaring. So what can you do to ensure your colleagues’ well-being in the office:
1
Ensure there’s a clear communication of what is hap- pening within the company. Good news should be cir- culated to all, but so too should bad news. Uncertainty
breeds stressful working conditions so be transparent with the company’s plans for the future by helping to spread the news through internal communications.
Encourage workers to speak up if they’re feeling under pressure. Ensure they know that it’s a team effort and if someone is struggling there is a sup-
port network in place to help them.

Are there provisions within the office for workers to get away from their desks for short breaks throughout the day? If not is there an area you can designate for time out sessions?
Think about turning a meeting room into a lunchtime yoga destination if it’s not being used. Speak to your nearest gym or find a local teacher
and invite workers to chill out for 45 minutes and learn how to relax without leaving the office.
PC problems confusion
We all know that internet security is a growing problem – but many office workers treat their home PCs with more caution than they do their work computers. A survey from Norman Data Defense revealed that many see work-
related internet security as someone else’s responsibility and that the majority believe a virus will announce its presence – with four in five people say they expect a pop-up warning if security is breached.
WORKING TIME ISSUES
According to an Eversheds’ report EU member states would like to see around 14 individual working time issues reviewed for the upcoming Working Time Directive review. The issues raised included the weekly rest break, the 48-hour working week, holiday days, overtime, annual working hours, weekend working and night working.
Did you know?
A survey for Meeting Magic revealed that only 54 per cent of business meetings actually result in action – that’s an awful lot of wasted opportunities.
