Jessica’s career isn’t the only thing to be boosted by her win though. The prize of three nights in Singapore has also boosted her love of travel. “I had never considered going anywhere like that but I am glad I did. Singapore was wonderful and I just fell in love with the place. The people were wonderful and the trip ended on a high note too thanks to my boyfriend, Giles. He proposed to me in Raffles on our last night there. It looks as if I have a lot to thank Executive PA for. I’ve certainly got more than I bar- gained for when I first sent off that award nomination!” Emma Jones also knows how it feels to stand out
from the crowd. She won the Executive PA magazine Up and Coming PA award for her work as PA to Jackie Bligh, chief executive of Merthyr Valley Homes, a not-for-prof- it housing association. “I only started working in my job in April 2009,” she
says, “but as there was no PA here before me I had to cre- ate the role myself. It’s a busy role that means I also have to look after four directors. I must have done well though as I was nominated for the award by my head of HR.”

Emma was just as shocked as Jessica when she won
her award but since then she has reaped the rewards of the surprise. “I certainly have more confidence in my work because it’s a validation that I am doing the right thing and recognition of my efforts so far. It’s also helped me put some of my goals into perspective and made me realise that I want to be the best PA I can be and one day I’d like to win the PA of the Year award too.” For the moment Emma is content in her current role as it is giving her the chance to develop the work as well as the business. She even admits that there is no part of her work that she dislikes, even down to the task lists. It also gives her a chance to build relations from anyone from councillors and the board through to residents and stakeholders. “I was also lucky enough to win a four day trip to
Center Parcs as a part of my award,” she says, “and that was a great chance to celebrate my win. Six of us went, including my husband and other family members, and we did just about every activity we could. It was a won- derful chance to reflect on what I had achieved and where I would like to go from here.” So if you want to gain recognition for your hard work enter the 2010 Executive PA Magazine awards today.
