Hello Duke fans! For this month’s issue, I thought I’d share some background information on our senior history majors: Jon and
Brian. Both student-athletes are concentrating in American History and have compiled exceptional academic careers. In fact,
Brian was recently named to the ACC All-Academic team for the third time (see reverse page), along with Ryan Kelly! Here is
some related info on our history majors...
Favorite history class? Favorite movie with historical context?
JS: “American Dreams/American Realities” with Dean Gerald Wilson. JS: Glory and Saving Private Ryan
It was just a great class that focused on some of the most famous
myths in American History. BZ: Gallipoli... One of Mel Gibson’s first movies, it was about Australian
sprinters getting sent to war.
BZ: I would have to say Dr. Gaspar’s “Maroon Societies” because it
was a small class with a lot of discussion about the Caribbean, pirates, Guest list for a dinner with anyone from history?
and buccaneers. That stuff is awesome so I had a lot of fun. BZ: Abe Lincoln - I want to ask him how he kept his beard so thick. On
a serious note, Winston Churchill and Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson.
Historical period you most enjoy studying?
BZ: I’ve enjoyed the American Revolution period and the events Jon: George Washington, Martin Luther King and JFK
before and after it that shaped the foundation of our country.
Single greatest moment in U.S. history?
JS: I like to study the World War II era -- That’s pretty fascinating. BZ/JS: You have to go with the Declaration of Independence.
