THE RIVALRY...AN ESPN SHOWDOWN...DICKIE V IN THE BUILDING...LATEST CHAPTER OF DUKE/UNC
2/10/10 - Regular Season Game #24 1st 2nd Total
(#8) Duke Blue Devils (20-4, 8-2) 28 36 64
North Carolina Tar Heels (13-11, 2-7) 27 27 54
Dean Smith Center - Chapel Hill, NC - ESPN
On February 10th, the Blue Devils made their annual eight-mile journey down 15-501 to visit the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.
As always, you could toss out the rankings and standings for this edition of the Battle of the Blues because the emotion and intensity
were at a feverish pitch. With over 20,000 UNC fans on hand in the sold-out Smith Center to watch the big game and Tyler Hans-
brough’s jersey retirement ceremony at halftime, the Blue Devils were in for a rigorous battle.
After the Tar Heels took a 43-39 lead with 11:52 to go and the crowd offered its loudest roar of the night, Coach K called a timeout
and the Devils regrouped. Mason Plumlee, who had one of his best games as a Blue Devil, completed a reserve dunk off an offensive
board to give Duke a 47-45 advantage with 7:02 left and Duke led the rest of the way. Veteran play from Jon, Kyle and Nolan and
toughness from the whole Duke team down the stretch made the difference in this one as the Blue Devils dominated the boards and
hit key shots when they were needed most.
“You’re doing something where really the basketball world
kind of stops and says, ‘There are a lot of things happening,
but let’s all watch this.’ For every player and coach who’s
been involved in this, they have to feel privileged to be in it.
For the most part, they’re great games, great kids and
unbelievable environments. It usually doesn’t disappoint.”
COACH K, on The Rivalry
“It feels really good. This is a great place to win. Man, it was just
a fun game, I thought we showed a lot of toughness down the
stretch... It’s a fun place to hit a shot or silence the crowd. Really
there’s no better feeling than when you are on the road and hit a
shot down the stretch to put them away.”
JON SCHEYER, on the win and his big 3 that sealed the victory
“Throw away the records, and
the passion and emotion come
out. The Dukies and the Tar
Heels will be awesome baby,
awesome with a capital A!
That intensity, that emotion,
is second to none, man.
Second to none.”
Undeterred by the screaming green
man pictured, Jon buried five 3’s and
24 DUKE BASKETBALL
DICK VITALE
scored a game-high 24 points in his
last game at UNC.
