THIS IS DUKE BASKETBALL
By Kellner Pruett - Sweet Briar, VA
What does Duke basketball mean to me? It’s seeing Jon score again and again,
Just take a seat because you’re about to see. He’s so good, even his parents are on ESPN.
The reasons I love it, without end I could list, Unselfish and smart, yea he’s got real poise,
But to sum it up I will just give you this. Schey from Chi-Town, this guys all Illinois’s.
It’s the magic of Cameron with its gothic stone, It’s being known for defenders like L.T.
The place comes alive with soul that’s homegrown. All players fear him, even outside the ACC.
Built on a foundation of nostalgia and tradition, Mason and Miles can take it straight to the rim,
This hallowed ground attracts great ambition. For the other team, it starts to look grim.
It’s the vintage brass railing and the intimate feel, It’s Casey and Jordan and Steve and Seth,
Along with the banners to increase the appeal. All their mad skills give the team great depth.
The spirit of Cameron, not that nearby dome, Ryan and Andre can score from downtown,
Greets you at the door and says ‘welcome home.’ By now it’s obvious Duke can take anyone down.
It’s back to that moment when Eddie Cameron hatches, It’s having the coaches above all the rest.
A brilliant idea on a box of matches. When it comes to talent, we have the best.
It led us all here to this common obsession, Past Duke greats: Collins, James, and Wojo,
And a tradition of excellence no one can question. All have experience and knowledge to bestow.
It’s the Cameron Crazies and their quick-witted cheers, It’s having Coach K with too many honors to name,
Their stomping feet are music to my ears. He’s got the leadership and a love for the game.
They never stop jumping or roaring ‘OHH!’ His thirty years of hard work and dedication,
Their devilish antics are part of the show. Built up what is now the Blue Devil nation.
It’s the energy our team gets from the crowd. It’s the look in his eyes and his quiet demeanor,
Players slap the court and yell out loud. His signature suit fresh from the dry cleaner.
On the wooden bleachers next to Coach K Court, Three national championships, 22 ACC,
Basketball’s best fans shout and exhort. Coach K elevates teams to a higher degree.
It’s knowing you won’t hear the next day, It’s Dockery at the buzzer and the ‘Miracle Minute’,
After the Crazies celebrate a passionate play. And all the great finishes that helped us win it.
The temperature rises and you start to sweat, It’s Hill to Laettner for the legendary shot,
You know it’s a night you will never forget. And all the plays that helped us get out of a tight spot.
It’s having players that show the Duke Way, It’s watching the rivalry between basketball’s bests,
Through leadership and teamwork everyday. And supporting the boys with DUKE on their chests.
Words like communication, trust, caring and pride, Tobacco Road residents, only eight miles apart,
Along with responsibility to them are applied. A different shade of blue in each athlete’s heart.
It’s having playmakers like superstar Kyle, It’s being part of something bigger than you,
An inside-outside threat and so versatile. And supporting your team no matter how they do.
Then there’s Nolan, an explosive and talented guard, Following them from the pre-season to tourney,
Together to the basket they take the ball hard. Being in love with every step of the journey.
It’s having an accent feature most feared. It’s my passion for the game and my love of the team,
Yes, I’m talking about Zoubek’s beard. And to be in that moment would be my biggest dream.
This big guy is physical, those rebounds he’s gettin’, Now to end this list, I’ll quote the great Dickie V.
All of your shots, he’s not permittin’. Duke basketball; Its AWESOME BABY!
